GRAB & GO and Volunteer Outside
RoanokeOutside.com launched a few weeks ago and as part of our mission to spread the word about how incredible the Roanoke, VA region is for outdoor enthusiasts we'll highlight a few parts of the website.
  • Grab & Go - We recently added a section that is designed to make it easier to get outside and explore new areas. The Grab & Go section is found within the Outdoor Trip Ideas section. Here you can choose and adventure, print it out, and hit the trail. Each option includes some suggested activities that you can "add on" to make your experience even better - such as visiting "Roanoke's Millionaires Club".
  • Volunteer Outside - Who knew you had so many options to volunteer. Set aside a weekend, get your friends and family together, and volunteer with one of these great organizations. They work tirelessly to make our outdoors even better.
Want to help make it even better? Here are a few things you can do while you are exploring the site:
We welcome your comments, observations, and suggestions! It is people like you that are helping make Roanoke one of the best outdoor towns around.

What's my recommendation?Pete Eshelman
  • On Friday- If you've never experienced StarBombing you need to - and now's your chance. Click here for details on this Starbomb. To learn more about StarBombing click here. Not sure if it will happen in the snow, but I think it would be even better in the snow.
  • On Saturday - Grab a sled, or some type of sliding device, and find the nearest hill. The snow should be great.
  • On Tuesday- Dust off your bike and join local riders for the Tuesday Night Beer Ride. It's open to all and strictly for fun. Note - you have the beer AFTER the ride. Or, you can skip the ride and just wait at the bar for everyone to return - either way you're in good company.

Give the Trails A Break - stay off for a while       Get Outside newsletter header
The recent rain and snow melt has taken a toll on many of the local trails. Carvins Cove has been hit particularly hard. When we hike, bike, or ride horses on trails that are wet and soggy it severely damages the trails. We need to give them time to dry out!

Some trails drain better than others, and thus fair better during wet conditions. Local trail builders have told us that the Mill Mountain trails tend to drain fairly well.

A good rule of thumb is - if the trail is pooling water, thick with mud, and/or you have a burning desire to walk off trail and around the mess, then you shouldn't be on the trail.

RoanokeOutside.com has a newly created "Trail Conditions" page where anyone can submit trail conditions. If you know the condition of a trail, please post it.

Speaking of Trails
A survey has been created to gather public perceptions of Mill Mountain Park's trails. Roanoke Parks and Recreation wants to provide numerous creative recreation opportunities to enhance the public enjoyment of this park and its trails. This survey is to help them better understand what kind of trail system the citizens and trail users would like to have. Let your voice be heard - take the survey!

Did you know it is the 75th Anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway     Get Outside newsletter header
The Blue Ridge Parkway's 75th Anniversary is officially here with the advent of 2010. Construction of the 469-mile All American Scenic Byway began September 11, 1935, at Cumberland Knob, near the North Carolina and Virginia border. A celebration of this special American treasure and its importance as a cultural, historical, and natural resource includes events and activities throughout the year in communities that line the Parkway.

A list of events, which may be searched by community or region or by month, is on line at www.blueridgeparkway75.org and is updated regularly. To date, over 400 events have been identified as part of the year-long celebration. To see a sampling of the events and festivities read the rest of the article>>>
