What's my recommendation?
    Outside Header
  • On Friday, put on your holiday garb and head to the monthly running of the StarBomb.
    Learn more
about the StarBomb. See the details for the December 4th StarBomb.
  • Search your attic, basement, or garage for your old ski/snowboard equipment and drop it off at
the Freestyle Swap & Sale. Just put a price tag on it and they'll sell it for you and then you can
use that credit to buy something new for yourself.
  • On Saturday, grab the kids, the dogs, your friends and go chop down a Christmas Tree. Yes
you heard me, chop it down. Some traditions are just worth keeping (or starting). Click here for
a list of Christmas tree farms by county.
  • On Sunday, go online and register for the 12/12 Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis.
$30 adult/$20 kid and it is for a great cause.
Go Riding!
For the past few weeks we've been introducing a Top 10 list of mountain biking trails in the Roanoke Region.
Each week we share a new mountain bike trail. We'll include directions to the trail, a map of the
trail, a short description of it and places to visit near the trail when you are done with your ride.

This week's trail is the entire trail system at Douthat State Park. Affectionately referred to as the
Disneyland of mountain biking, Douthat has over 43 miles of moderate to advanced trails originally
created by the Civilian Conservation Corp.
  1. Carvins Cove
  2. Poverty Creek
  3. New River Trail
  4. Huckleberry Trail
  5. Explore Park
  6. Mill Mountain Trail System
  7. Douthat State Park
Go Hiking!- Earlier this fall we compiled a list of the Top 10 Hikes in the Roanoke Region.  You can download these, and a few others, by clicking here>>>

Gear Review From the Gear Junkie: Sound Disk Beanie
There is no shortage of options for skiers and riders who want to slide to music. (See headphone-equipped helmets, in-ear choices from Skull Candy, and DJ-style headphones from WESC, Technics and Sony.) Another one? How about a beanie with headphones by Aerial 7.

The company's Sound Disk Beanie was released last month. At $59.99, the hat offers a mid-range option compared to similar products from Burton, Bonfire, The North Face and Volcom.

Aerial 7 Sound Disk Beanie The Disk Beanie has a hand-knit look and is stylish on the slopes. For audio, the headphones are sewn into the beanie but can be moved around. This is good when you want to fine-tune placement. But I found it to be a bit maddening to get the speakers in place at other times because the ear phones are between the hat itself and the liner. Since they're connected, sometimes they go just where you want them. Other times they don't and hence the frustration. Ideally they would be sewn into mini pockets, so they were always in correct, general vicinity and the placement would still be fine-tunable.

Once you have the small speakers situated, sound quality is good. The beanie "merges fashion and function with...

Antioxidants Could Boost Muscle Strength
Researchers have found that a high intake of Vitamin C and E is linked to muscle strength preservation as you age, Reuters reports. Muscle strength naturally begins to wane when you're in your 40s, and it drops significantly after 60. The researchers studied more than 2,000 men and women in their 70s over two years.

They examined the participants long-term eating habits and measured their grip strength at the beginning and end of the two-year period. The findings show a strong positive correlation between Vitamin C and E intake and greater muscle strength, regardless of individual participant strength levels at the outset.

The Gift For The Person Who Has it All - Yosemite?
What do you get the guy or gal on your list who has it all this year? Get em Yosemite, or Joshua Tree, or maybe the Grand Canyon...

Sierra Club has launched a green giving program called "Sponsor a Wild Place," where people can sponsor a national park
like Yosemite or the Grand Canyon in honor of a friend, and the friend gets sent a little package with info and a present.

It's also a great money-saver because you get two things in one - you get to make your end-of-the-year donation to a good cause, and also have a great gift sent to a friend or family member. You can choose whether to to have your friend/familymember receive a stuffed animal that represents the sponsored park (i.e.a bear for Yosemite) or a backpack, so it's a gift that works for all ages, kids or adults.

100% of the profits go to support Sierra Club's work to protect our environment. Wild Places sponsorships help support the Sierra Club's ongoing efforts to protect wild places from development and global warming.

More info, images, and a list of all the different parks that people can sponsor, is available at:
