pete's picks
What's my recommendation?
 - On Friday (11/20) the band Southern Culture on the Skids is playing at
the Taubman Museum in celebration of the museum's one year anniversary (details). This is one of my favorite bands. They are filled with energy and not to be missed. Listen to their music here>>>
- If you're like me and plan to eat a lot of food on Thanksgiving day you may as well "earn' some credits by running in the Star City Half Marathon. You can register the morning of the race.
- If you aren't up for the Star City Half Marathon then be sure to check out the Thanksgiving Day Drumstick Dash 5K and Family Fun Walk.
- Not quite ready for either of the above races, you can still earn some credits by hiking the Star Trail on Mill Mountain. While at the top be sure to visit the Mill Mountain Zoo (closed Thanksgiving Day). Be sure to call your friends/family from the Star and they can see you on the StarCam.
- When you are done with your day you need to have dinner at Le Bisto by Tony Pope.
Quite possibly the best dining "experience" I've ever had. Tony Pope
incorporates a Farm to Table Cuisine model that uses produce and meats
from local farmers. Go with the Chef's Tasting Menu if you want an
unforgettable dining experience. Located at 125 Cambell Avenue in
downtown Roanoke (540.206.2611).
Go Explore!Over the next few weeks we will introduce the Top 10 Mountain Biking
trails in the Roanoke Region. Each week we will share a new mountain bike trail. We'll include directions to the trail, a map of
the trail, a short description of it and places to visit near the trail
when you are done with your ride.
This week's trail is the entire trail system on Mill Mountain. Mill
Mountain Park offers incredible mountain biking within 5 minutes of
downtown Roanoke. The trails encompass the summit of Mill Mountain
(1307 ft.) and the Roanoke Star. This area offers 500 acres of
parkland, picnic areas, overlooks that provide 20-60 mile vistas, and miles of trails. -

- Poverty Creek
- New River Trail
- Huckleberry Trail

Go Hiking!- Earlier this fall we compiled a list of the Top 10 Hikes in the Roanoke Region. You can download these, and a few others, by clicking here>>>

What's Your Survival IQ?
Outside Magazine has posted their Outside Survival Quiz that is designed to test your ability to survive in a number of situations out in the wilderness.
The questions are definitely challenging and will leave you scratching your head on more than one occasion on what the best answer should be.
Some of the choices are obvious or easy to rule out, but others are not
so easy, and really require some thought or first hand experience in
the best way to handle a situation. Some of the answers they
provide are also a bit contrary to other things you may have heard or read,
which goes to show you that survival isn't really an exact science.
All that said, I have to admit that I only correctly answered 7 of
the 14 questions correctly. That gave me a "D" on this quiz, and
probably means I'm going to die a slow, agonizing death out in the
wilderness somewhere. Take the quiz for yourself, and leave a comment
with your score. I'm sure most of you will do better than I did!

Budget-Friendly Solar Charger- Gear Review
With
pocket-sized solar chargers the craze, Highgear designed one for
backcountry techies on a budget. New this winter, the Highgear
SolarPod, at just $50, is a basic solar charger about the size of an
iPhone.
Designed to charge phones and mp3 players, the SolarPod is said to
disperse power for 40 minut es on an 8-hour solar or 1-hour computer USB
charge. That should be enough time to rejuvenate your iPod for a few
hours of music or your cell phone for some crucial talk time.
Attached to the corner of the SolarPod is a carabiner clip so you
can secure it to your pack and charge while you go. It also comes with
eight connector tips for various phones, including a USB connector for
mp3 players, digital cameras or anything Apple.
The 2.4oz-unit, which is the company's first-ever solar charger, also has a battery indicator in 25 percent increments.
The Highgear SolarPod will be available in December for $50. www.highgear.com
