Fall is in the air
and that means its time to go camping. If you've never been to the Roanoke Mountain Campground, now is the time to check it out. From the campground you can easily access some of the best hiking trails in Roanoke.

What's my recommendation? StarBomb Friday night, Waterway Cleanup Saturday, Haunted Zip Line ride Saturday evening, and then watch the Poor Mountain Hill Climb on Sunday.

Go Explore
- Each week a new hike will be added to the list as we compile the Top 10 Hikes in the Pete Eshelman image
Roanoke Region. This week we add a beautiful hike that is often overshadowed by its sister hike McAfee Knob.  The Tinker Ridge/Hay Rock section of the Appalachian trail is not to be missed. Click on the name and you will be able to download directions, map, and some tips:
  1. McAfee Knob section of Appalachian Trail
  2. Dragon's Tooth section of Appalachian Trail
  3. Chestnut Ridge off the Blue Ridge Parkway
  4. Star Trail on Mill Mountain
  5. Roaring Run Recreation Area (and natural water slide)
  6. Explore Park trail system
  7. Cascades Hiking Trail (also fishing!)
  8. Carvins Cove trail system
  9. Tinker Ridge/Hay Rock section of Appalachian Trail

Get OUtside Expo & Radical Reels - THank you!

By all accounts the inaugural Get Outside Expo & Radical Reels Film Festival on September 30 was a success.  A sold-out crowd of 350 people gathered inside the atrium of the Mill Mountain Theatre for the opportunity to mingle and familiarize themselves with the local organizations that accentuate our outdoor experiences in the region. After the Expo everyone crammed into the theater and were mesmerized and inspired by some truly amazing outdoor sports films.

Special thanks to the Roanoke Regional Partnership, Mill Mountain Theatre, Center in the Square, Schaal's Catering and Events, and the many local outfitters, stores, and organizations who participated.  Without them this event would not have been possible.

Many outfitters and stores donated gear and trips for people who completed the survey located on RoanokeOutside.com.

Help clean up the Roanoke River

Saturday is Waterway Clean Up Day. It marks the day that citizen volunteers get together to "cover the waterfront" and provide our waterways with some needed TLC. This year's focus is on the Roanoke River. We really are fortunate to have a river running through Roanoke, and with some TLC it can become a thriving watershed.

The Clean Valley Coalition has organized several clean-up crews throughout the valley and you are invited to join a special crew that has been assigned the task of cleaning up some hard to reach portions - via canoe - in the Wasena/Smith Park area. If you are interested in helping please RSVP via email by 5PM on Friday and you will receive all the necessary details.

Greenway Etiquette
Picture of Greenway
Roanoke Valley Television and the Roanoke Valley Greenways have created a video on greenway (or all trails for that matter) etiquette.  Believe it or not, there is a lot of conflict between user groups and we all need to do our part to help get along. Please help by spreading this video.

Want to meet other outdoor folks? Need a Group to hike, BIKE, or Paddle with?
Here are a few outdoor social groups that allow you to meet other people and get outside!
  • Meetup Roanoke Outdoor & Social Group this group seeks to bring together people from around Roanoke and the New River Valley who are interested in outdoor activities. They attract a wide variety of people with varying interests and experience levels and provide a mix of activities (hiking, backpacking, biking, climbing, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, caving, etc.) that can be enjoyed by all. Events range from hikes to whitewater rafting to social mixers.
  • Roanoke Cycling Organization, Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, and New River Bike Association are three great cycling groups to check out.
  • The Creek Freaks is a local paddling club that does events throughout the year
  • KIVA (Kids In the Valley Adventuring) is a group that helps families and kids connect with nature
  • Roanoke Sunday Hiking Group (on Facebook only - request to join the group). This is a group formed by "people who don't have free time on Saturdays. We seek to create a group of friends who want to explore the world around us. Whether it is walking in the woods, cooking out, or visiting something new and exciting, we seek to do something other than just lay around on Sundays."
