The Freedom to Choose

Each year on July 4th we celebrate our independence and freedom, our national "birthright".  Over 200 years ago, the founders of our country made a decision to choose a different path, to venture into the unknown, and to form a new community.  These commitments transformed the destiny of their lives and the lives of countless others, past, present and future.

At CUP we believe there is a larger opportunity in 2010, an occasion to be independent practitioners as well as inclusive and collaborative colleagues.  CUP practitioners share a common goal of fostering and maintaining an environment that allows transformation, inspiration and enrichment for ourselves, our clients, and the community at large.

If you resonate with this vision, we warmly invite you to come and experience our Center.  We have a wide variety of opportunities for clients, practitioners, and facilitators.  If you would like to collaborate or visit with us, please call Kari Paul, Facility Coordinator, for an appointment.  To reserve your time, you may reach Kari at 616.842.0264 ext 1.

The Importance of Loving Your Body
Jann A. Jannelle
Healing Arts Practitioner of 27 years

Our bodies deserve positive regard and attentive care.

Stressful activities of daily living can create strain patterns, postural problems, and physiological imbalances in the body. If left unaddressed, these changes can become significantly problematic, such as developing into pain syndromes.

What keeps us from meeting the needs of our bodies? Indeed many factors. A large factor for many of us is how busy we are throughout our day. However, if we can take a moment to consider the needs of our bodies, we'll often discover the first step is quite simple - to breathe - full inhale...full exhale - while simultaneously bringing to mind an awareness of our full Self in our surroundings. That is, to be still and listen in a quiet expansive space of mind. This may allow us to take in life, all that we are, and all that we have, dropping into gratitude.

Perhaps the next step, albeit less familiar to us, may be bringing the spaciousness of stillness into movement. A sense of graciousness, peace, and connection can be cultivated when moving through life in this manner. This is so innately natural and resonant to the body and it's rhythms, that it can move us from functioning in a state of havoc to one of harmony.

I believe that becoming mindful of the importance of taking time and space to create harmony in our body is an act of Self-love. As we generate Self-love, those around us will appreciate the quality of presence we offer. Thus, one could consider generating self-love an important relational tool, well worth developing. So initially, if you can't justify taking the time to attend to the needs of your body for yourself, perhaps you can do it in the name of serving your relationships with others, until your inner relationship with Self becomes a priority.

If you're feeling a need for assistance to make this shift in orientation, I would like to offer my support within an integrative format. Relaxing and therapeutic bodywork, i.e. massage therapy, can reduce levels of stress, create comfort in the body, and restore structural and postural balance. This, followed by a direct experience in stillness through meditation, gently engages your bodymind in cultivating subtle awareness's of Self. These awareness's can then be brought into easeful movement to lead you on your path of Loving Your Body. You may be amazed at the vibrant confidence and enthusiasm this can create.

I invite you to contact me by phone at 678.431.7096 or email, jannjennelle@yahoo.com. I welcome the opportunity to discuss how my services may be able to help.

In Peace,

Jann

Sandra Kuhn
Nurturing Your Child's Self Esteem
Sandra Kuhn, MSW, LLMSW

Last month I talked about resiliency, and how "being resilient" allows your child to not only to bounce back from stressful or difficult situations, but also promotes a positive, proactive framework.  Self esteem and resiliency are closely linked with self esteem going one step closer to the inner of your child's perception of self. Self esteem, in a nut shell, describes how a child (or an adult) feels about who they are as a person.  The perception of self gives way to attitudes and behaviors which affect overall adjustment. In general, low self esteem may be demonstrated through a reluctance to try new things, low tolerance for frustration and an overall sense of pessimism.  You may also hear comments such as "I'm so stupid" or "I'm such an idiot".  A positive self esteem, on the other hand, describes an orientation to interacting with others, being a good problem solver, optimistic and having a good sense of their strengths - and ability to accept weaknesses. Here are some ways that you can help develop positive self esteem in your child:
  • Be generous with praise.  Look for those situations where your child is doing what they should be doing.
  • Reward effort and completion instead of focusing only on the outcome.
  • Teach positive self statements.  If you hear negative self talk, help your child rephrase the statement in a more positive way.
  • Encourage and develop decision making skills.  Answer questions, brainstorm alternatives - let them hear you think out loud.  Be a good role model.
  • Laugh.  And sometimes, laugh at yourself.  Display a good sense of humor and demonstrate that sometimes your just have to laugh at your own mistakes.
  • Facilitate a health attitude about teasing.  Children need to know that some amount of teasing can't hurt them.  Teach coping strategies such as "oh well, names can't hurt me" or " that is kind of funny" when normal teasing occurs.

Sandra Kuhn, MSW, LLMSW will be holding two classes in the fall designed to help children, parents and families.  If you are interested in either or both, please connect with Sandra for more details.

Children's Friendship Training.  This is a twelve week program for children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder or related behavioral diagnoses that may benefit from skills training focused on making or improving friendships.  Parents participate in their own group during the twelve weeks to learn how to reinforce these skills, as well as the research that supports the program.  Classes are expected to run weekly from mid-September through the end of November.

Parent Support Group and Skills Coaching.  We will explore the challenges of parenting and learn strategies to ultimately improve parent-child dynamics, boost your confidence as a parent and enhance your child's self esteem.

Invitation to Light Your Fire!

Multidimensional Lovemaking
Exploring the 7 Dimensions of Sexuality

What makes for great lovemaking?  You know the kind-- where you swoon together with your partner, where body and soul blend, when the pelvis links with the heart.  Most of us have had this loving a time or two.  All of us would like it more often.  Hardly any of us knows how to create this type of intimacy reliably, repeatedly.
Multidimensional sexuality is the way to engage this type of connection.  And, it is not difficult!
Our medical training led David and I to take a systematic approach to intimacy and create the 7 Dimensions of Sexuality.  Thirteen years ago our conviction that vitality and energy emerge from integration of mind and body led us to combine the physical with the emotional and ultimately, the spiritual aspects of love making.  We want to share these dimensions with you because we know they are powerful and because we want to extend our workshop focus to create a wider community of couples who wish to explore embodied intimacy.

david and lanaWe invite you to join Dr. Lana Holstein and Dr. David Taylor for a complimentary teleconference for individuals, couples, counselors and therapists twice this month.   Drs. Holstein and Taylor David will spend an hour introducing you to their 7 Dimensional approach and allow time for questions and answers. These calls are engaging, thought provoking and may even inspire you to practice multidimensional sexuality.

Clear your calendar and tell your colleagues and friends that are interested in experiencing deeper levels of love, intimacy and a new vitality for life.

UPCOMING FALL EVENTS YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS!
Financial Health Workshop
with Rick Kahler and Amy L. West, MSW

Rick Kahler Amy WestWe all experience how stressful unanticipated expenses can be and money worries are becoming
an everyday problem for so many (even the "rich and famous"). With uncertainty all around us, our financial life doesn't have to be yet another cause for anxiety. Research has found that we hold over 250 unconscious beliefs about money (or our own "money scripts") which we've built since early childhood. Some are helpful, but the majority thwart our best intentions to attain our financial goals and find peace of mind around money.

Rick Kahler, Certified Financial Planner, best selling author and national speaker on Financial
Health, provides clarity to uncover our hidden beliefs and transform the role of money in our lives. Through his highly acclaimed new workshop combining sound financial principles and crucial experiential therapy (a groundbreaking integration called "financial therapy"), our lifelong "money scripts" can be rewritten, creating a healthy new relationship with our money. This new found clarity can change lifelong financial behaviors, enabling us to finally attain our goals, achieve aspirations, and honor our life values.

Featured on ABC's 20/20 and Good Morning
America, endorsed by celebrities including Wynona Judd, and touted as "a pioneering approach for a new financial age", this workshop is for anyone who seeks to end money worries once and for all. Join us on October 23, 2010 and experience the life-changing power of a lasting financial peace of mind.  For more information on this workshop or to register, please contact Amy West at amy@theunlimitedpossibilities.com
