Slow Down: Good advice in hot weather from Fleet Feet Johns Creek, GA -- This is science, not opinion. Less blood to your muscles = slower pace. Don't fight it and try to be a "hero" or "heroine" - slow down and enjoy your run. We are out there because we love it. Why push yourself to run a pace that your body simply isn't able to hold comfortably? You will enjoy your summer runs much, much more if you lower those speed expectations just a bit.
Fastest time for running the bases? Michigan Runner magazine's newsletter found a website that says 13.3 seconds is the record for a baseball player rounding the bases. It was set a long time ago by a player named Evar Swanson. http://speedendurance.com/2009/03/16/fastest-baseball-inside-park-home-run-world-record/
For the 4th year in a row, hometown native Bobby Mack set a new course record at the Beat the Heat 5K on July 21 in Winston-Salem, NC. This year, he had only one second to spare. After setting a new course record in 2009 at 14:20, he lowered the record to 14:17 in 2010, to 14:14 in 2011 and to 14:13 in 2012, missing the State Record by only 5 seconds. As a result of his strong performance, he continued his domination of the USATF-NC 5K Championship. Click here to read more on the Beat the Heat 5K.

| | What was I thinking? Lessons learned the hard way
By Teri Saylor
So a few years ago on a frigid Saturday morning in the middle of winter, I came up with a brilliant idea for keeping warm during a 10-mile group run.
I would wear tights - the pantyhose kind - under a pair of thick track pants.
This arrangement would be just the ticket for staying toasty, I reasoned.
The tights were nice and snug, and the pants easily fit over them. I felt great. For about five miles.
Eventually the running group split up, and I found myself running alongside a nice Asian fellow whose English language skills were shaky at best. Midway through the run, I felt an ominous creeping sensation deep within my layers of clothing.

The Runners' Owners Manual
By Cedric Jaggers What is the thing we find in every car and never read until we have a flat tire? The owner's manual of course. Please no e-mails from those few of you who do actually read the manual from cover to cover, we would all probably be better off if we followed your example. Does the same hold true for runners? Wouldn't we be better off if we thought of our body as something we owned that we need to take good care of? I'm holding the manual out of my car in my hand and the table of contents has some really interesting chapters. So let's use the title of the chapter and change the word 'driving' to 'running.'
