Good advice for hot weather running -- "Stay wet my friend, when you pack your drinking bottle include another bottle to pour on your head, shoulders and legs." Robert Espinosa, owner of Fleet Feet Sports in Savannah, GA.
"I have to run early in the morning before my brain figures out what I am really doing." The Fleet Foot, newsletter of the Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, FL.
Ragnar Relay Tennessee has announced a partnership with Soles4Souls, a Nashville nonprofit that collects new and used running shoes, providing them to families and kids in America and the world who live in poverty.

The 8th Annual Hot Lips Hustle 5k will be held Sept. 22 in Marietta, GA. The race was founded by a 12 year old Marietta girl who was born with cleft palate. She began the race to fund surgeries for children who otherwise could not afford treatment for this terrible birth defect. To date, the race has funded surgeries for 172 children. For more information go to www.hotlipshustle5k.com.
Sharon Marks, president of the River City Runners & Walkers Club of Parkersburg, WV, ran the Great Wall of China Marathon, a difficult marathon that includes goat paths, miles of uphill and downhill steps on the Great Wall, and a three-mile downhill run to the finish. She finished third in her age group and was 23rd overall woman, 106th overall finisher, in a field of 900 runners.
A study by Johns Hopkins researchers showed deaths associated with running a marathon are very low. Of 28 runners who died during or within 24 hours of running a marathon between the years 2000 and 2009, half were over age 45 and all but one in that age group died of heart disease.
Brent Manley, newsletter editor of the Memphis Runners Track Club, wrote in his column, "I have been alive for more than half a million hours, with reasonable expectations for living another quarter million. If you add up all my marathon times, the sum is probably less than 300 hours, less than one-third of one percent of the hours in a year." He added that completing a marathon took a "long time, relatively speaking," and referred to a quote from Albert Einstein: Time is what prevents everything from happening at once. (Looks like Brent will suffer from marathon time like everyone else on the course unless he can find a way to make time seem like it passes faster.)
Savannah Striders members do a lot of training runs and then eat breakfast. One of those runs is an early Sunday morning run across "the bridge" and back. If you've been to Savannah, you know the bridge, which is sometimes referred to as the "concrete monster." If you've never run the bridge before, "you're in for a treat, especially on the way back," according to the newsletter invitation to Savannah area runners.
Brambleton, VA, has been named an RRCA Runner Friendly Community by the RRCA. Brambleton has paths and walks throughout, providing runners and walkers with safety and the ability to avoid running in the streets. Several runner-friendly businesses have dog water bowls in front of their stores. The Step Sisters Road Runners Club calls Brambleton home.
Running investment question - If 100 accountants each ran 4.01K, what would be the total distance run by all 100?

Overcoming challenges and succeeding
By Bruce Morrison, Publisher This is a story about two runners who have faced severe challenges and persisted with many steps - strides that have taken each a long way and with goals still to be attained.
Stephanie Freeman, Rochelle, Georgia On June 4, 1993, Stephanie, then 14, was in an auto accident, suffering brain and lung injuries which nearly took her life. She was in a coma for two months. "My family was prepared for the worst and hoped for the best, but the reality was I had little chance to live," Stephanie told me. Today, at age 33, she is an accomplished runner and has completed two marathons - the Jacksonville Bank Marathon (4:14) in 2006 in Florida and the Museum of Aviation Marathon (4:01) last year at Warner Robins, GA., where she was second in her age division.
