Cotton Row crowd

Running Journal traveled to  Huntsville, AL, this week for the 33rd annual Cotton Row 10K held on Memorial Day. The race is annually the final event on the Running Journal Grand Prix. A great crowd of more than 2,000 runners lined up for the 10K with another 2,000 in the accompanying 5K.  Our thanks to the Huntsville Track Club for another outstanding event. Look for full coverage of the Cotton Row races in the July issue of Running Journal.

Running News

Micah True, famed ultra runner who was found dead March 31 after going for a trail run in New Mexico four days earlier, apparently had heart disease, according to results from an autopsy. The 58-year-old had idiopathic cardiomyopathy, heart disease with an unknown cause. His body was found two miles off the trail near a stream.

USATF's athlete of the week won the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200-meter races over two days at the 4A Nevada High School State Championships. Nick Hartle's times were fast: 47.79 in the 400 and 4:18.03 in the 1600 on the first day, then 1:52.53 in the 800 and 9:28.27 the second day. He scored 40 of Centennial High School's 79 points, leading his school to the state title.

A couple of "fun time" southern races:

National Run Day 5K in Asheville, NC, will be held June 6 at Fletcher Park, 6:30 p.m., and includes a "Skirt Chaser" event in which female runners get a two minute head start. Guys must catch the leading lady to win.

Miss Georgia Pageant Pajama 5K will be held on Friday, June 22 at Columbus, GA, with runners encouraged to run in their "cutest and most tastefully outlandish pajamas." Race begins at 11:30 p.m., following a Battle of the Bands at River Center for the Performing Arts.

Christin Parsons in The Roadrunner newsletter of the Memphis Runners Track Club: "When people ask me why I run, I tell them there's not really a reason. It's just the adrenaline rush when you start, the feeling when you cross that finish line, and knowing that you are a winner no matter what place you got."

Local running news in daily newspapers took a jolt when four southern dailies announced publishing cutbacks to three days a week. They are The Times-Picayune of New Orleans, and three Alabama newspapers --The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, and the Press-Register in Mobile. The papers will publish on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

The Knoxville, TN, Track Club ran advertising in a recent edition of its newsletter seeking track & field officials for the club. Among the promised rewards for helping local competitors were these: "Stand on the track looking important with colored flags in your hands" and "Travel to exotic locations like Alabama and Mississippi."

The Peninsula Track Club of Newport News is the oldest running club in Virginia and certainly among the oldest in America. It was formed in 1955 and serves runners in the Virginia Peninsula with more than 600 members.

Ragnar Relays will be held at Washington, DC, Sept. 21-22 (Cumberland to DC), then in Tennessee (Chattanooga to Nashville, Nov. 9-10), followed by Ragnar Relay teams running from Miami to Key West, Jan. 4-5, 2013. For more information on how to participate with a team in these events, click on the banner in this newsletter, or a banner on our website, or go to http://www.ragnarrelay.com.

Dr. Chris Fox, president of the Palm Beach Road Runners: "We all run for different reasons. For some it starts out as a stress reliever, some a way to lose weight, and others a way to challenge yourself. There are a million reasons why someone wants to run, and a million excuses not to. Every day that you make the decision to lace them up and take the first step out the door, you've made a decision to concentrate on yourself and your health for the length of that run. You're a runner. It's what you do."

Choose a small race, maybe at some location where you've never been, and enjoy the experience. Mega races attract a lot of runners but small races offer lower entry fees and a healthy change of pace. Look at the Running Journal calendar and choose one.

Norma Phillips has been named to the River City Runners & Walkers Club Hall of Fame in Parkersburg, WV. She served the club in numerous capacities and the club operated from her home for 15 years.
