There's lots to read in the April issue of Running Journal. Post-race recovery is the theme in two articles, as Lena Hollmann deals with the physical aspect of recovering from a hard race, while Richard Ferguson offers tips on dealing with the mental side of the post-race letdown. The Knoxville (TN) Track Club is featured, along with more articles, features, race results, and race calendar included in the April issue.

Run for the Potties 5K will be held for a very good cause May 26 in Lakeland, FL. Every dollar goes to the City of Lakeland Lake Hollingsworth Restroom Fund. It's an effort led by Rich Wills and the FITniche running store crew to build restroom facilities at Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, a favorite running area that is shared by pedestrians and cyclists.

A good idea by the Birmingham (AL) Track Club - A portable sign along the race course that gives a "To Do List" as "1. Finish This Race, 2. Join This Club." The sign features the club's new logo. President of the club is Jennifer Andress. Club officers are seeking ways to market the BTC to the community at large. Membership increased substantially last year, increasing from 677 In February 2011 to 760 in November.

Bruce Davis, newsletter editor of the Peninsula (VA) Track Club at Newport News asked this question in the newsletter: "Which is better - running a race and taking home a trophy for placing in your age group or coming in last in your age group and setting a personal record?" Bruce recalled setting a PR in a small 10K race years ago. Just 28 runners had finished on a very rainy day. At the awards ceremony, everyone in each age group won an award except - you guessed it - his age group. There were eight runners in his group and Bruce, with his PR, finished eighth. "Runners know that the biggest race is against yourself," Bruce wrote. He's right ... but a little hardware is nice, too.

Scott McNeil and Michele Mallory were named top finishers in the 2011 Road Warriors series of road races of the Memphis (TN) Runners Track Club (MRTC). Other members honored were Maggie Moore and Prentiss Turman, most improved runners; Henry Cotter, Rockett Award for faithful service; Joyce Blackford, Horton award for loyal service at races, George Higgs, Spirit of the MRTC for his energy and vision; plus, three couples were honored as volunteers - Cindy and Mike Rickert, Debi and John Bookas, and Julie and Jeff Dillon.

Side Stitches:  Coach Jakson Badenhoop of Performance Multisports.com, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, gives this advice:  "Side stitches can be a major pain -- especially when they pop up during a hard workout or race. When a stitch strikes, concentrate on breathing from your belly with every exhale, then pull your abdomen and chest in on every inhale. Exhale forcefully, as though you were trying to blow up a rubber balloon. After four breaths, visualize the cramp and try to direct your breath into it, as if you were massaging it away."

Run-n-Rite-- Our print publication, Running Journal, encourages runners to write a guest article. It can be about a running experience you've had, or about another runner, or just about anything to do with running. Include a photo, if possible. Email to RJ@Running.Net.

100 historic and rare photos will be included in the 125th Commemorative History of the Boston Athletic Association. The book, "B.A.A.: 125" by John Hanc will be available in December. B.A.A. Executive Director Tom Grilk said the book "will show that the story and significance of the Boston Athletic Association is broader than simply the Boston Marathon."

Anonymous quote in The Fleet Foot newsletter of the Gulf Winds Track Club, Tallahassee, FL: "I would only take up jogging so I could hear heavy breathing again." (A terrific newsletter with a sense of humor.)

Drying your running shoes - "Newspaper is still the best way to dry a wet pair of running shoes. Stuff shoes with crumpled newsprint, wait a few hours, check and remove or replace paper if needed." (The Magnolia Runner, Jackson, MS.)

Chatham County, GA gets praise from Fleet Feet Savannah for the county's plan to expand the Julie Backus Smith Trail at Lake Mayer into a four-foot wide recycled rubber surface. Work to begin in about six weeks. That trail will eventually connect to Police Memorial Trail near Daffin Park with a 4.6-mile asphalt trail.

Chuck George of New Orleans has now directed 900 races and is on his way to many more - an average of 30 per year for 30 years. Chuck is with New Orleans Running Systems Road Race Management.

Healthy Kids Day will be held April 14 in Asheville, NC, and will include two races for children. A quarter-mile run for kids 5-and-under will be held at 12:30, while those 6-12 will participate in a half-mile run at noon. The events are sponsored by Foot Rx running store. Healthy Kids Day will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Knoxville Track Club 50 Years Strong

By Kristy Altman, Managing Director, Knoxville Track ClubKTC logo

The Knoxville Track & Field Club (KTC) celebrates 50 years of running and life in the Knoxville, TN, community. The KTC was founded in 1962 by eight charter members: Dr. Ben Plotnicki, Charlie Durham, Hal Canfield, Jerry Wrinkle, Sam Venable, Charles Lobetti, Coppley Vickers, and B. E. Sharp. In the early years, practice was held three evenings a week on the old East High School track and invited athletes were asked to try out for the KTC team. In late spring 1962, the team made a trip to Furman University to compete in an open AAU meet. KTC took 20 athletes and came home with the first place trophy.

Post-Race Recovery -- An Art or a Science?

By Lena Hollmann

I am tossing and turning in my bed, unable to sleep. Sore and aching leg muscles are keeping me awake. I want to take a hot bath to loosen them up, but I am staying in a hotel and don't want to wake my neighbors. It is the wee hours of the morning of February 19, 2012, and the previous day I had run the Myrtle Beach half marathon in 1:51:22, bettering my time in Houston the previous month by more than two minutes. And now I was paying for it!

Post race leg soreness is nothing new to me of course, or to any competitive runner. The experts call it Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS for short. It occurs when the muscles have to work much harder than they are accustomed to, causing micro tears in the muscle fibers. Click here to read more.
