Bring Back the Mile, a national campaign, is under way to bring back the distance as a standard event. The mile holds a special place in track history. The first sub-4 minute mile by Great Britain's Roger Bannister in 1954 is regarded as the greatest individual athletic achievement of the 20th century, and no other event has produced an equivalent of the sub-4 minute mile standard in the sport, in the media and in the public's mind. The mile has lost some of its luster over the past decade, especially at the high school level where the 1600 meters is run, 9 meters short of a Mile. View the Bring Back the Mile campaign at: www.bringbackthemile.com.

The Running Network has recaps of the 2012 Olympic Trials Marathon, plus you can learn more about the "Bring Back the Mile" campaign, plus much more by clicking this You Tube site:

Running Club Profiles

Nashville Striders -- Provides race management, helps community, Tom King races are in March

By Peter Pressman, President, Nashville (TN) StridersStriders

In early 1970, there were 17 original members when the Nashville Striders Club was established with Tom King as President. This group of runners mainly met at the Downtown YMCA or at Percy Warner Park.

The Club remained pretty much low-key for the next few years, with the group adopting the name of Nashville Striders in 1975, with King as president. By late 1976, the club listing included 74 members. The year 1977 marked a major milestone, as the monthly publication, the Funrunner, was established by Larry Wallace.

A surge in membership followed, with growth to 250 members by the end of 1977. With the increased interest in running and introduction of local events, along with publishing of the Funrunner, membership grew to 1,000 by mid 1978. By late 1979, records show membership approached 1,500.

Tidewater Striders Running Club

Almost 40 Years Old and Goin' Strong

Founded by a handful of dedicated runners in 1972 the Tidewater Striders has provided support to the running community for almost four decades. As the club's leadership speculates on an appropriate 40th anniversary celebration, it is looking at both accomplishments and the road ahead for the 1,600-member club.

The club has produced hundreds of club races and thousands of races co-produced with community partners over the years with over 60 events on this year's schedule. Using both chip and manual timing for cross country, road races and trail runs from a mile to 50K, the Striders partner with myriad non-profits, school PTA's and athletic departments to provide the running community with a host of opportunities to run and walk.
