Disney will stage the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-miler Sept. 28-29, 2012, a late-night race that will include ghostly streets haunted by villains. The event will be held at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park at the famed resort near Orlando, Florida.

The new 2:03:38 world marathon record, set Sept. 25 at the Berlin Marathon by Kenyan Patrick Makau, has been officially certified by the International Athletics Federation (IAAF). The Sept. 30, 2012 race is already sold out (40,000 entries), though some travel agents have a few spots left.

The race committee for the Charlottesville Ten Miler announced that an anonymous donor has agreed to match funds raised by the race for the Dr. David Jones Lung Cancer Research Program at the University of Virginia. The donor agreed to match up to $270,000. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America. The race will be held March 31 and registration is now open at www.cvilletenmiler.com.

4 Runners Only, a running store in Winston-Salem, NC, was closing Dec. 31. Owner Steve Bennett announced, "For 12 years, I have enjoyed running a successful business and establishing relationships with so many new friends. My love of running and the desire to share that joy with others has been a blessing over the years. However, it is time for new opportunities and new adventures."

Pensacola, Florida has been named a Runner Friendly Community by the Road Runners Club of America. Pat Kozma of the Pensacola Runners Association said, "Our runner friendly environment allows us to run almost 365 days a year with the Gulf of Mexico, Historic Downtown Pensacola or the Black Water State Park as our backdrop.

The 10 Best Moments for U.S. Distance Running in 2011

By Ryan Lamppa, Running USA wire
Every year since 2000, the year of U.S. distance running's nadir, it has been more and more difficult to earn a spot in the Top 10 Moments of the Year. A performance that 5-7 years ago warranted a Top 10 rank now merits honorable mention, and 2011 was collectively one of the deepest years yet as U.S. distance runners continued their ladder of success with more World Championship medals, broken records and top performances on the track, roads and turf and in the mountains.

The impressive 2011 performances by U.S. distance runners should serve as a springboard for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and Team USA will likely have several true medal contenders at nearly every distance event and no distance medal(s) or near medals in London would be a surprise and a disappointment. Click here to read the Top 10 Moments of 2011.

Out With the Old, and In With the New!

  By Lena Hollmann

Another year, full of hope and possibilities, lies around the corner. For us runners, hope might be that our training will go smoothly, and there are always possibilities to beat last year's seasonal bests -- or at least to not slow down, if you are a masters runner. New Years is therefore a great time to evaluate what is working and what is not with our training and racing, and maybe also to try something different!

Yes, something different. You are probably familiar with the saying that we cannot keep doing the same things and expect different results. This month I want to give you a few hints and suggestions for new things to try out in your training. Some will hopefully result in faster racing times, while others are mostly for fun. Continue reading by clicking here.
