jingle jogThe holiday season brings out the best in us. A lot of races support worthy causes throughout the year. Now is a time to help provide toys to children. One of the races doing just that is the 24th Jingle Jog 5K and the Junior Elf Run in Atlanta in cooperation with the Salvation Army Toy Drive. Nice effort ... and thanks to all races providing similar events. Learn more about the Jingle Jog: www.jinglejog.com.

A special young runner who hopes to run in the Paralympic Games - the Olympic games for athletes with disabilities - needs some financial assistance as he competes in international competition. I hope you'll read the story of Michael Murray on our website. Go to the story here.

Saw this well-known quote in the Daytona Beachcombers Running Club newsletter (The Beach Buzz) - "It ain't over 'til it's over," said longtime New York Yankees catcher Yogi Berra. It's one of the great quotations in baseball lore and now we can apply it to running.
Yogi had a few other quotes that can be applied to running:
-- "You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there."
-- "If you don't know where you are going, you will wind up somewhere else."
-- "When you come to a fork in the road, take it."
-- "He can run anytime he wants. I'm giving him the red light."
And this one can apply to runners who are carbo-loading:
-- "You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six."

Running Journal's website, which features the best running calendar for the Southeast, is having remarkable growth, thanks to the thousands of runners who visit it each month (thank you). We compared the number of "unique visitors" going to the website very recently and realized that 22% more runners were visiting this year than at the same time last year. In all, 17,628 different runners used the website in a 30-day period.

Charlotte (NC) Running Club member, Lindsey Hikes, took 3rd Place Overall Female and 1st Place Overall-First Time Ultra Marathon at the Can Lake 50 Mile Ultra in Canadaigua, New York. She also received a silver medal for finishing in under nine hours. Lindsay said, "I was not sure if I would finish a 50 mile run, let alone finish third overall. Once the starting bell rang out, something in me clicked, I did not just want to finish, I wanted to win." She finished in 8:32:17

Molly and David Jackson recently acquired the Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota (FL) franchise from Pat and Mackenzie Jones.

Breakaway Running recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of that store's opening in Memphis, TN, in 1981.

Support your local running store because by doing so you will be helping your local community. Susan Hastings of Fleet Feet Sports in Stuart, FL, pointed out in a recent column in her newsletter that "if you spend $100 locally, $68 returns through taxes and payroll. If you spend $100 at a national chain, only $43 stays in your community. If you spend $100 online nothing comes home.

Two of the greatest contributors to running were the late Dr. George Sheehan and Jim Fixx, both of whom contributed great prose about running. Both agreed on something vitally important - the value of play. Sheehan suggested an hour of play each day and his play was running. Fixx said, "Running is play, for even if we try hard to do well at it, it is a relief from everyday cares."

The Knoxville (TN) Track Club has inducted eight members into the club's Hall of Fame: Brint Adams, Donnie Graham, Hayes and Joyce Hunter, Eddie Reymond, Marty Sonnenfeldt, Max Springer, and Jerry Wrinkle.

The 2011 Arkansas RRCA Grand Prix Champions were recently announced. Leah Thorvilson was named the Overall Female Champion while Imari Dellimore was the Male Champion. The Little Rock Roadrunners took top honors in both the Male and Female Teams Category. For a complete list of winners, see the Arkansas RRCA website.

Running Clubs are featured in Running Journal's print edition. It is our intention to feature as many clubs as possible, thus every running club is invited to submit a story and photos for publishing in Running Journal. We've published club articles from throughout the South. Contact us (RJ@Running.Net) to schedule your club's free story and photos.

River Region Runners Club Serves the Montgomery, AL, Area

 By Kym Klass/River Region Runners

It was a small article in a local newspaper in the early 1970s - three men reaching out to the community to form a running club. The goal was to promote physical fitness and sponsor a handful of races under the name Montgomery Track Club.

 It worked.

Almost 40 years later, that track club is now the River Region Runners (R3), a 300-member organization that this year helped organize 28 races - almost every other weekend - and most recently was selected to host the Road Runners of America's (RRCA) Southern Region 5K with its Labor Day 5K Run.

It won't be long now until you run your biggest race of the year. You want to be at your best, both mentally and physically. In other words you're looking to "peak" for your big event.
