November 2012

In the November issue of Running Journal, Richard Ferguson discusses how to deal with the mental barriers that may prevent us from reaching our full potential as a runner. Lena Hollmann presents both sides of the debate on rising race entry fees and Teri Saylor writes about runner's "guilty pleasures." More articles, race results, and our comprehensive race calendar all in our November issue.

 Frosty

You know it's winter when you see a snowman. This one caught my eye - it's for the Dec. 10 Frosty Fun Run in Murfreesboro, TN, at the Stones River Country Club. Tennessee's leaves are falling, Thanksgiving is approaching ... and too soon it will be winter.

Now, think of warm winter: the Saturday Feb. 4 Double Bridge Run 15K at Pensacola, FL, takes runners across Pensacola Bay and Santa Rosa Sound, then on Sunday, Feb. 5, there's the Feb. 5 USA Half Marathon Championships at Melbourne and the Tallahassee Marathon & Half Marathon.

Speaking of weather, Richard Betz of the Highlands (NC) Roadrunners Club said, "Surely this is the most beautiful time to run in Highlands. Soon it will be rainy and cold. Now is the time, here is the place. And so I ask again the time-honored question to each and every one of you: Are we going to run, or are we going to talk about it?"

Family discounts are being offered by the New Orleans Track Club. Example: Entry fee for the Turkey Day 5 Mile and Kids Half Mile is $20 but the family rate for club member families is $40 for two adults and all family members 17 and under living in the same household. Pre-registration is required. The family discount program is available for all races owned and produced by the club.

Runners' names on the back of medals will be offered by Fleet Feet Sports in Savannah for participants in the Nov. 5 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon & Half Marathon. You must visit the store Monday afternoon (Nov. 7) or evening to get the engraving done. Bring your medal and race number. Runners from all 50 states are registered for the marathon, which has 23,000 entrants.

The Charlottesville (VA) Track Club is serious about preparing runners for that area's oldest race with its Charlottesville 10 Miler Training Program. It's a 21-week program that includes Saturday morning group runs "led by friendly captains who will keep you motivated to train through the cold winter." There's much more to the program, including a weekly email newsletter and a daily training schedule for all levels and abilities. Cost is small - just $15 for non-members, $10 for members.

The Spa Pacers of Hot Springs, Arkansas have been honored as the "Outstanding Group" by the Arkansas Governor's Council on Fitness. The club was selected for its exceptional leadership in physical activity and health for Arkansas citizens.

Send club info for publication in Running Journal's print publication, our newsletter, and/or on our website. Take a photo of newly elected club officers, recipients of annual club awards, and any special event involving your running club. We want to recognize special activities and deserving volunteer leaders.

Follow the Blue Suede Running Shoes to Memphis, TN, for the 54th Annual RRCA Convention, which will be held March 15-18. It's a great opportunity for running club leaders, race directors, runners, coaches, sponsors, and industry professionals to share. The event is hosted by the Memphis Runners Track Club. For info on the convention, visit http://www.rrcaconvention.org.

mississippi bluesGreat race name - the Mississippi Blues Marathon & Half Marathon. This event will be held Jan. 7 at Jackson, Mississippi. Send us your nomination for great race names.

The Greenville (SC) Running Club has started a Trail Runners Group for local runners. The 9 a.m. Saturday group runs will start Nov. 19 in the overflow parking area atop Paris Mountain. Info: Trailrunners@GreenvilleTrackClub.com

Goody Tyler has been named Virginia state rep for the Road Runners Club of America. A Norfolk native, he has been an active member of the Tidewater Striders for two decades. Tyler has worked every aspect of race management for his club and has served as vice president for the past four years. He succeeds Bob Platt.

Former Kentucky state rep Lisa Dahl has been appointed RRCA state rep in Minnesota.

The News & Observer Old Reliable 10K has been added to the Sunday, Nov. 6, City of Oaks Marathon and Half Marathon. This keeps alive a 26-year-old Raleigh, NC, tradition. Participants of the 10K event will run alongside marathon and half marathon runners. Registration is now open on the official race website at www.cityofoaksmarathon.com

Running Journal serves runners online at http://Running.Net, plus with the monthly print edition mailed to subscribers, plus with our monthly email newsletter. We also link to running clubs and running stores throughout the South. We are members of the Running Network and link to member publications across the country. Making Friends on the Run

By Lisa Overall/Memphis Runners Track Club

Runners I have met are some of the nicest folks I have ever known and I can truthfully say that some of my dearest friends are the ones I run with currently.

It is difficult not to become close when you share the agony of a 20-mile run in the middle of August in Memphis, Tennessee, or a three-mile run in January when an "Arctic Express" cold-air blast dips down from Canada. Click here for the rest of the article.
