Greetings!

The year is coming to an end, yet the activity at the boat shop is at a new high level.  This year's raffle boat is now complete, next year's boat has been selected, work has begun in earnest on the refurbishing of the Beetle Cat boat and we have more new members working with us as we enter this new phase.  In addition, we have a wine and cheese party in mid-December and an annual dinner party after Christmas at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor.  All this and more is provided for your review in the paragraphs below.

Your Skipper,

Ray Hartjen

Two End-of-Year Celebrations!!

Mark your calendar for the big moment - the raffle drawing for the Catspaw Dighy that volunteer members built this year. We will have a Holiday Open House at the boat shop on Saturday December 18th from 4 to 6PM, with the raffle drawing at 5:30PM. If the weather cooperates, you will enjoy a beautiful sunset along with wine and cheese; the selection of wine from New Zealand, compliments of member and winery owner Andy Harris. This is an open house. So bring your friends along!

Our Annual Holiday Dinner has been moved this year to the American Hotel in Sag Harbor and will be on Wednesday December 29th.  There will be a cash bar beginning 6:00PM.  At 6:45PM there will be a sit-down dinner with red and white wine at your table.  Your reservation will be guaranteed now with a $50.00 (per person) check (includes tax and gratuities) made out to EECBS and mailed to EECBS, PO Box 1784, East Hampton, NY 11937 by Thursday December 23rd. Or, you can wait to receive an invitation letter in the mail that will go out shortly.

The Boat Building Crew

The members who volunteered their time this year to build the Catspaw Dinghy that will be raffled off with a new trailer as a fundraiser to maintain the Community Boat Shop: Bob Sheldon, Don Schreiber, Richie Davgin, Robert Vossen, Pierce Hance, Burt Van Deusen, Kent Miller, Tom Rosko, Nick Stephens and Ray Hartjen.

Classic Boat Fair

This year's Classic Boat Fair was on Saturday July 17th at the boat shop, under a beautiful sunny sky.  Although the crowds weren't as great as last year, we had a very successful day.  Not only were many raffle tickets sold for the Catspaw Dinghy, we also had very rewarding nautical flea market tables with numerous items sold; and we were able to sell two sailboats that had been recently donated to the Society.

Louse Point Boat Meet

This is the first Louse Point Boat Meet I missed since it began many years ago.  I was off to Baltimore at my daughter's graduation for her masters degree.  But the event went on as scheduled without a hitch on Sunday, August 1st.  Many members arrived with their boats while others took the opportunity to row and sail about in Accabonac Harbor in the numerous vessels available.

Boat Restoration Program

This year the focus restoration-boat is our Beetle Cat  that was donated to us over a year ago.  We found the ribs to be tired, the deck needing recovering, a new centerboard trunk to be fashioned and all of the brightwork in need of stripping and refinishing.  We are part-way through this process as you can see pictured here in the basement of the boat shop.  The deck will be removed and all of the ribs replaced.  Then we'll begin the process of rebuilding the boat and refinishing her.  When complete she'll look like a brand new Beetle Cat for members to enjoy next season. Come see our progress!
Sunshine Tender
Sunshine Tender - The 2011 Raffle Boat That We Will Build

"Sunshine -- A Tender and Lifeboat in One Pretty Packet," quote by Walter J. Simmons, boatbuilder and author.

The 2011 raffle boat we will build is the Sunshine Tender.  We purchased the drawings and a 14-foot roll of paper that represents the lofting lines of the boat from Duck Trap Wordworking in Lincolnville Beach, Maine. This boat will be easy to row and hopefully sail if we get that far in the construction process. A quote about the boat: "Sunshine is a 10' 6" yacht tender. She can't be called unique, because her lines date from the early 1900's. But she can be called a very special tender, because she outperforms so many of her kind."
