Upcoming Events 2009

Classic Boat Fair at the Community Boat Shop, Amagansett, NY  Saturday July 18th, 10 AM to 4 PM

This will be our first public display of classic boats at the boat shop. Our featured boat will be the Swampscott dory which is nearing completion in the boat shop and for which raffle tickets are being sold. Many other classic boats will be on display. You will also have an opportunity to see the half-dozen kayaks our members have built over the past 6 months. The members will be available to discuss how you can create your own beautiful wooden kayak.

Louse Point Boat Meet, Springs, NY . . . Sunday, August 2nd 10 AM to 4 PM

Once again we will be gathering on Louse Point at Accabonac Harbor (Louse Point road in Springs, NY) on the first Sunday in August, for what has become an annual affair. This year we will have available more boats than ever for you to try your hand at rowing, paddling and sailing. Plan on bringing food and a small boat to share, and of course your bathing suit and suntan lotion. We plan to have the town parking restrictions removed for this moment by the sea as we did last year.

Fisherman's Fair, Springs, NY . . . Saturday, August 8th 10AM to 4 PM

We are delighted to be able to bring to the Springs community a display of this year's raffle boat, the Swampscott dory, one of our newly built kayaks and our beautiful replica of a Herreshoff Columbia dinghy. Plan to stop by our display and purchase your chance to win the dory, this year's featured boat. Or, stay for an hour or so to help encourage other fair visitor
Montauk displays to become members in our expanding group of classic boat enthusiasts.

HarborFest in Sag Harbor, NY . . . Friday, September 11th through Sunday, September 13th

HarborFest is our primary display event of the year. Join us to spend a few hours helping to sell raffle tickets or enticing HarborFest visitors to join our ranks. We have an ideal location on Long Wharf, the village dock, where almost everyone who visits the festival comes by to admire the craftsmanship of the classic boats we'll have on display.

Maritime Festival in Greenport, NY . . . Friday, September 18th through Sunday, September 20th

This will be our second year at the Greenport festival.  Pat Mundus, who now resides in Greenport, is working with the event directors.  She has secured an ideal location for our display of classic boats. We will be in Mitchell Park, which is on the waterfront where the popular antique carousel is located. We will need your support there also in terms of time at our display selling raffle tickets and encouraging people to join our organization.

Annual Holiday Dinner Party at the Community Boat Shop, Amagansett, NY . . . Saturday, December 19th, 6:30PM to 10PM

In late fall you will receive an invitation to our annual holiday dinner party. We will be raffling off the Swampscott dory at the party!

Swampscott Dory Nears Completion

Rob Barker and a dozen or so members have been working weekly to complete building the Swampscott dory. She has come a long way in the past month or so. The planking stock we acquired came with very few knots, which is unheard of these days. The 5/4" thick flitch-cut Atlantic White Cedar enabled us to cut book matched planks for each of the five strakes.

Our master Boatwright Rob Barker is off for a few weeks and will return in early July to bring the boat to completion.  In the meantime, our members will begin the process of sanding down the hull and laying on the first coats of paint. You are encouraged to stop by and lend a hand on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

6 New Kayaks Close to Launching

In the next few weeks 6 newly built kayaks will be ready for launching. In fact, one has already had its maiden voyage. Richie Davgin has proven to be the most diligent worker, having completed his kayak several weeks ago. It is truly impressive to see how elegant the kayaks have turned out. You will have an opportunity to view these craft at each of the events noted above.

Spring Boat Maintenance

Kent Miller is heading up the crew preparing the sailboat, the Susan Constant, for her spring launching.  He needs your help since much of the painted surfaces are in need of scraping and re-priming before the final coat can be applied. Kent and his crew will be at the boat shop on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The plan is to have her launched in the next few weeks. She will need almost a week for her wooden hull to swell-up, as she has been in our heated basement for the entire winter.
                                                         Membership

This is just a reminder to those of you who have missed the opportunity to renew your membership for 2009. At this point in time we have received renewals from only half our members. Another renewal notice will go out shortly. Our expenses are not great thanks to the volunteers for all of our activities. However, the insurance costs for the boat shop are much higher than we had anticipated. Every member is important to us. The cost is minimal for individuals at $35 and for families at $45. Donations are always welcome and tax deductable (we are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization). A check made out to EECBS and sent to PO Box 1784, East Hampton, NY 11937 will help keep us on an even keel. Be sure to stop by and participate in our boat building activities. Thank you for your continued support!
