The Skipper at the helm of a 12 Meter Greetings!
Welcome to the Classic Boat e-mail service.  I have finally found the means of keeping you well-informed as to our activities and programs.  It is my intent to send e-mails to our members as frequently as monthly when there are programs to be announced.

This e-mail, through the Constant Contact service, will evolve over time until it matures as a communication device complete with photos and possibly even videos as I become more proficient in its use.

To the left are short descriptions of news and events. Click on each for the related story or scroll down.

Now that we have completed the building of the boat shop, it is our intent to become better at communicating the opportunities that exist with this incredible resource.  Thank you for your continued support and patience.

Your Skipper,
Ray Hartjen

Louse Point boat meet 8/2008
Upcoming Events
Annual Meeting Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at 2 PM.
Our annual meeting will be held in the boat shop at 301 Bluff Road in Amagansett, NY  (behind the Marine Museum).  Come and see how we have progressed from a group of boat shop builders to real honest-to-goodness boatwrights.  Let your voice be heard as we chart our course for the next year.

Louse Point Boat Meet Sunday August 2,2009, 10 AM to 4 PM
Once again we will be gathering at Louse Point (Acccabonic Harbor in Springs, NY) on the first Sunday in August, for what has become an annual affair. This year we will have available more boats than ever before for you to try your hand at rowing, paddling and sailing. Plan on bringing food and a small boat to share, and of course your bathing suit and suntan lotion. We plan to have the town parking restrictions removed for this moment by the sea as we did last year.

Harborfest in Sag Harbor, NY - Friday, September 11th through Sunday, September 13th, 2009.

Maritime Festival in Greenport, NY - Friday, September 18th through Sunday, September 20th, 2009

6 Kayaks Nearing Completion
Kayaks nearing completion
As we go to press three of the six kayaks are preparing the final covering of their decks, just one step prior to sanding the hulls in preparation for painting or varnishing.  Our Kayak builders, Kent Miller, Susan Cook, Richard Davgin, Kelly King, Jim Zajac and Gabe Schiavoni are all looking forward to a launch date in early May. These novice boat builders are feeling their oats as they near the completion of their 'first boat' status.  It is a delight to witness the satisfaction each of these builders are taking in the detailed tasks necessary for each step in the process.
Swampscott Dory early stage
Restarting the Swampscott Dory
By mid-April Rob Barker will return to the boat shop to work daily on the framed out Swampscott dory.  Members are invited to drop in and lend a hand to the task of that day.  The format will not represent a class but will focus on the work necessary to complete that day's task.  If you are in the neighborhood and want to participate in this form of boatbuilding, we invite you to join in this effort to complete this project.  The object is to have a completed dory ready to be raffled-off by the time of our Louse Point boat meet.

Proposed Programs
We are planning to offer a number of afternoon and/or evening programs on topics relevant to effective boat building.  I have listed the topics below and would appreciate your indicating to me by return e-mail those you would be interested in attending.  Please also indicate the time of day it would be best for you and whether you prefer it be a weekday or weekend.

The topics are:
Steam bending, Tool Sharpening, Lofting, Oar Making, Splicing and Whipping, or a topic you wish to be considered.

Spring Boat Maintanence
When you have a small fleet of boats there is always the task of preparing them for their spring launchings.  As you can see in the adjoining photo, members are already at work preparing the Bennett skiff for that critical moment when we need to set the mooring for the Susan Constant in Accabonac Harbor.  Last year the Susan Constant wasn't launched until the beginning of August, since we were completing the building of the boat shop.  You can help move up that date to the Memorial Day weekend by stopping by on Wednesdays and Saturdays to paint her bottom and scrub her bilge and whatever else is necessary to have her in great shape for this summer of sailing.  Pierce Hance has been heading up this effort along with Kent Miller who is master of the fleet.  By the way Pierce has just had a new hip set in place and is recovering nicely.  We hope he will be back with us in another week or two or three.
