Is your cat at risk?
Obesity in Cats is Rampant!

A 2011 survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention showed that 55% of cats are overweight. With those overweight cats,15% of the owners believed their pet to be of normal weight. The cause of obesity is fairly straight forward- we are feeding our cats more calories than they expend! Feeding high calorie foods, overfeeding treats, and not practicing portion control are major factors that cause weight gain. Lack of exercise also plays a role as mostly indoor cats are much more sedentary than those that spend time outdoors hunting and exploring.

Why should we be so concerned about obesity in cats? Obese cats are at a higher risk for manyfinal fat cat serious illnesses: Insulin resistant (Type II) diabetes mellitus commonly occurs in cats with excess body fat. Extra weight stresses tendons, ligaments, and joints, increasing the likelihood of injury or lameness, which may eventually develop into arthritis. Cats store excess fat in their liver which predisposes them to a liver disease known as hepatic lipidosis. Obese cats often also have shorter life spans than healthy weight cats. To assess your cat's body condition>

How do I get my cat to lose weight?

We recommend diets high in protein and low in carbohydrates, like canned foods, as they are closest to the natural diet of the cat. When fed a diet high in carbohydrates, the excess carbohydrates are stored in the body as fat. We can help you learn how to transition from a dry to canned diet. Although much less ideal, dry diets can be used AS LONG AS calories are restricted. Portion control is critical. We will help determine your cat's goal weight and the appropriate number of calories and portions of food to feed daily to achieve weight loss.

Increasing your cat's activity will also help with weight loss. Adding a few 10 minute play sessions a day will increase your cat's metabolism so that fat is converted back into usable energy. Hiding food or using puzzles that contain low calorie treats may increase your cat's exploration of its environment. The addition of climbing trees or exercise gyms will also increase activity.

Cats Exclusive's new weight loss program (below) has  been developed by our doctors to assist and support you in addressing your cat's weight issue safely!

Week 1:

  • Extended initial physical examination and consultation with your veterinarian - 30 minutes.
  • Upon determining your cat's health status and that the program is appropriate, your cat's ideal weight  will be determined and a safe weight loss program will be established. Exercise opportunities will also be discussed.
  • "BEFORE photo" taken & entry in Cats Exclusive's Feline Biggest Loser Contest (details below).
  • Receive a program packet with guidelines and recommendations including food discount coupons.
  • Receive 15% off exercise "equipment": wand and laser toys, food puzzles, cat trees, wall climbers and more (good for 1st month).

Weeks 2 & 3: Follow-up calls by veterinary nurse to make sure things are progressing and at a SAFE rate. Your doctor will be informed and a phone consultation will follow if needed.

Weeks 4 & 8: Weigh-in with veterinary nurse, your doctor will be informed of the results, with a phone consultation to follow if needed.

Week 12: A 20 minute appointment with your veterinarian. If weight objective is met, then a long term maintenance plan will be established. If the goal is not met, then future needs and a revised plan will be determined.

Week 16: Final weigh-in with a veterinary nurse to make sure your cat is maintaining the weight loss. Your doctor is informed and a phone consultation provided if needed.  "AFTER photo" taken and the program is completed. If further follow-up is needed this would be outside this program package.

Entire Program: $95 ($163+ value)              1st appointment must be scheduled during May to qualify for Feline Biggest Loser Contest.
