Dear Friends,
We hope you and your furry companions are all off to a good year in spite of any challenges you may be facing. We hope this year brings many positive changes for all. At Cats Exclusive, we began our year with fresh new paint, inside and out, and expanded hours - we are now open until 8 pm three nights a week and on Saturdays until 5pm. We hope these new times will be helpful to those of you who prefer evening or Saturday appointments. We invite you all to stop by if you can on February 11, to see the changes for yourself and help us celebrate our 28th anniversary - see details below. We thank you for being part of our Cats Exclusive family. Each day we are impressed by the devotion we see our clients giving their cats. It makes our jobs so much more rewarding to be able to work with such dedicated cat lovers such as yourselves.

Warmly,

How To Save Money on Your Cat's Care

When times are tough, how do you continue to provide the appropriate care for your cat(s)? Cats are a member of the family, but clearly do not bring in income to help offset their care. At Cats Exclusive we are committed to helping you care for your cat in the most cost-effective way possible.

An excellent way to offset the cost of veterinary care over the long haul is to get health insurance for your cat. If your cat is less than one year old, we are now highly recommending Trupanion, with offices here in Seattle. T
his company covers all major medical needs for the life of your cat with minimally increased costs of your monthly premium (based on inflation rates, not your cat's age or health status). Trupanion will cover 90% of your costs with no restrictive fee guides (including emergency facilities, specialty hospitals, and referral clinics). A few examples of medical conditions they cover include intestinal foreign body removal, vomiting and diarrhea, ear infections and diabetes - all very common in cats.

Other companies to consider for cats one year old and older are VPI,
PetsBestCats and PurinaCare. Packages differ quite a lot, so be sure to consider your individual family needs in choosing the best plan.

However, the best way to potentially reduce your veterinary costs is to minimize trips to the veterinarian in the first place. Here are some tips.

> Provide a high quality diet, preferably canned food. Feed in appropriate amounts to achieve a healthy weight.

> Keep your cats indoors. Most indoor-only cats live a longer, healthier life than those allowed outside. If your cat does go outside, consider keeping him/her safe via cat proof fencing.

> Brush your cats teeth. Daily dental brushing can reduce the amount of tartar build-up and thus reduce the need for frequent professional dental care. To view an informative video with brushing tips.>>

> Brush or comb your cat regularly. Especially if your cat is prone to shedding, this can help prevent hairball formulation. Hairballs have the potential to create medical problems that need doctor visits.

> Keep up with recommended wellness examinations; for cats up to 13 years of age - annually and for those 13 and older - bi-annually.  This will enable us to catch medical issues early on when we can manage them with less intervention and less strain on your pocketbook.

And remember, our Cats Exclusive team is always happy to answer any questions you have regarding your cat's health.

Enhanced Vaccination Safety

At Cats Exclusive we are constantly reviewing the literature to keep abreast of any medical changes that we believe will enhance your cats health, including providing the safest vaccination protocols. Drs. Faythe Vaughan and Kate Schubert recently attended a symposium on feline vaccinations which presented some new information that we have incorporated into our vaccination recommendations.

As always, we strive to balance the needs for vaccinations to protect against deadly diseases with our understanding of the potential risks to cats from vaccines. At Cats Exclusive, our goal is to keep your cat's vaccinations to the absolute lowest number necessary - utilizing only those vaccinations that provide true protection.

Our new recommendations include injectable kitten vaccines that will provide kittens with better protection when they are most vulnerable. Then, as your cat becomes an adult, s/he will need an intranasal vaccine which reduces the potential risks of side effects related to injectable vaccines. All cats should be vaccinated against rabies, but only cats with outdoor exposure require leukemia protection. To view our updated vaccination guidelines.>>
Food Drive Results:
A Huge Success!

We were quite moved by the outpouring of generosity we saw during our holiday pet food drive here at Cats Exclusive, despite the sluggish economy. In November, when we began our food drive benefiting Seattle Humane Society's Pet Food Bank, we had no idea how successful it would be. We wondered if we would be able to fill the huge barrel we were given. Not only did you fill it once, but pretty much every week throughout the food drive. Your donations weighed in at 732 pounds. Then we matched those donations pound per pound. Together, we were able to donate 1470 pounds of food. That's literally 3/4 of a ton of food that went to local families in need. Thank you so much for your generosity.

taff Veterinarian
Dr. Brandon joined us three months ago and has been a great addition to our team. She grew up in Oklahoma and did her undergraduate work and received her veterinary degree at Oklahoma State University. She graduated with honors in 2002. She then moved to Washington State shortly thereafter and practiced equine medicine for 6 months before determining working with cats was her true passion. With 13 cats of her own and having worked in a feline-only practice the past 5 years, she came to us with extensive feline expertise and enthusiasm. She has special interests in soft tissue surgery, geriatric feline medicine and multi-cat households. We are very happy to have her with us.

Kai Jacobson, LVT, Boarding Manager A Northwest native, Kai has worked in the veterinary profession for 8 years in many different facets. She started at Cats Exclusive three years ago during which time she became a licensed veterinary technician (LVT) and a very valued part of our nursing team. She then spent 9 months as an at-home mom after her daughter was born, prior to coming back with us four months ago to head up our boarding department. We are thrilled to have her in this new role which will utilize her strong organizational, medical and leadership skills.
