Donations Many girls in our target locations for next year are unable to pay and participate in the program. If you are interested in providing a program scholarship for girls for our upcoming Spring 2011 season, please visit our website and click the DONATE button to make a donation. Scholarship amounts are from $25 to $125. A donation of $250 sponsors one girl for one year. This amount goes toward providing trained coaches, the GOTR curriculum, snacks, t-shirts and registration fees needed to support the program. As part of our mission and commitment to Austin and surrounding communities, we will bring the Girls on the Run program to all areas in need, but we need your help.
About Girls on the Run
GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare pre-teen girls for a lifetime of self-respect, positive choices and healthy living. Over 12 weeks, girls are guided by trained volunteer coaches, and learn about the power of positive self-image. At the end of the semester, in celebration of their achievement, girls along with their families, coaches and volunteers participate in a local 5K race.

Welcome to our newest Board Member
Vira Vielmann
Events Coordinator
Vira attended St. Edward's University and earned her degree in Communications with a minor in English Writing and Rhetoric. She works in Sales and Marketing for Behavioral Science Technology, Inc., a global safety consulting firm that helps companies create injury-free workplaces. She has also worked with several non-profits over the years including Ronald McDonald House and Animal Trustees of Austin. In her words, "I became interested in Girls on the Run because it wasn't your typical non-profit after school program. It combines classroom teaching, life coaching, and fitness, which is definitely unique, and all things I value. I absolutely fell in love with this program when I served as a coach and realized I was making an impact on the girls' lives. The coaches are not just teachers in this program, but serve as mentors and leaders who teach invaluable life lessons to young girls. Knowing that you're making a difference in a child's life at the present time, and perhaps even in her future, is the best gift you could ever receive, and ultimately, is the sign of great program."
Thanks to Our Former Board Members
We would also like to thank Maggie Savage and Jodi Lisa Ondrusek for their time, efforts, energy, enthusiasm and love for the mission of GOTR. Both women were instrumental in bringing GOTR to Austin.
- Maggie was our former Board Secretary and an active participant in Girls on the Run.
- Jodi was our former Events Coordinator and coach. She will continue as our volunteer coordinator, where she has been invaluable.
We look forward to seeing them at various GOTR events throughout the year.

So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids by Diane E. Levin Ph.D. & Jean Kilbourne Ed.D.
The authors accuse the media of sexualizing children, particularly girls. The result is that kids are having sex younger and with more partners than ever before. Intended for parents of children ranging in age from 4 to 12, this book offers advice on how parents can limit children's exposure to commercialized sex, and how parents can engage kids in constructive, age-appropriate conversation about sex and the media.

Run for the girls and for YOU!
"I began the race strong, almost too strong. Around mile 7 I found my stride and kept a steady pace. At mile 19, I hit my mental wall and had to walk. For the next 5 miles I ran/walk. Mile 24 was my turning point. I saw a woman cheering while holding a sign that read "There will be a day when you can no longer do this. Today is NOT that day." I teared up. About 30 yards ahead was the Nike power station, and I heard a man on a microphone say, "2.2 miles left. It's time you finish what you started!" And that was it. I ran all the way to the finish line!
