Donations Many girls in our target locations for next year are unable to pay and participate in the program. If you are interested in providing a program scholarship for girls for our upcoming Spring 2010 season, please visit our website and click the DONATE button to make a donation. Scholarship amounts are from $25 to $125. A donation of $250 sponsors one girl for one year. This amount goes toward providing trained coaches, the GOTR curriculum, snacks, t-shirts and registration fees needed to support the program. As part of our mission and commitment to Austin and surrounding communities, we will bring the Girls on the Run program to all areas in need, but we need your help.
About Girls on the Run
GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare pre-teen girls for a lifetime of self-respect, positive choices and healthy living. Over 12 weeks, girls are guided by trained volunteer coaches, and learn about the power of positive self-image. At the end of the semester, in celebration of their achievement, girls along with their families, coaches and volunteers participate in a local 5K race.

It's that time of year again...time for a 5K!
WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 18th at 8:30am
All of our participating girls are automatically registered to run. Anyone wanting to run with a girl as an official Running Buddy, must register using this link and then send an email to Jodi.
Each Running Buddy is paired with a participating girl and stays with her for the entire run, encouraging her along the way. For most girls, this will be their very first 5K run, so it's very exciting and an incredibly rewarding experience. |

Thank you to all of you who came out to our 2nd Annual "Runnin' Down a Dream" Benefit. Thanks also to our sponsors who helped make it all possible, and a special thanks to our amazing volunteer and former coach, Vira Vielmann, who organized the event!
We raised enough money to provide scholarships to 35 girls next semester! This means there will be 35 girls who will learn about living healthy and who will belong to a community of girls learning to be strong and confident. |

Teens with Low Self-Esteem Often Boost Their Image Online
When it comes to social networking sites, teenage girls, particularly those with low self-esteem, don't always present themselves honestly. Girl Scouts of the USA conducted a national survey this year of 1,026 girls ages 14 through 17. The survey found that girls often downplay their positive characteristics on social media networking sites, and many choose to portray themselves as sexy or crazy. In fact, 74% of those who responded said that they believe their friends make themselves sound "cooler than they really are" online.
Other notable findings show both the pros and cons of social networking:
- 82% reported themselves as smart
- 59% said they were a good influence
- 33% of girls with low self-esteem said their online image didn't match their in-person image compared with 18% of girls with higher self-esteem
- 22% of girls with low self-esteem portrayed themselves as sexy compared with 14% of those with a higher self-esteem
It's always important for girls to discuss safe online behavior with their parents. To read more about the study and related findings, click here. |
In January 2011, GOTR of Austin will be recruiting for a new board member. If you would like to be considered, please contact KB and include a copy of your resume. |
