Looking to donate?

Many girls in our target locations for next year are unable to pay and participate in the program. If you are interested in providing a program scholarship for girls for our upcoming Spring 2010 season, please visit our website and click the DONATE button to make a donation. Scholarship amounts are from $25 to $125.

A donation of $250 sponsors one girl for one year. This amount goes toward providing trained coaches, the GOTR curriculum, snacks, t-shirts and registration fees needed to support the program. As part of our mission and commitment to Austin and surrounding communities, we will bring the Girls on the Run program to all areas in need, but we need your help.

About Girls on the Run
GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare pre-teen girls for a lifetime of self-respect, positive choices and healthy living. Over 12 weeks, girls are guided by trained volunteer coaches, and learn about the power of positive self-image. At the end of the semester, in celebration of their achievement, girls along with their families, coaches and volunteers participate in a local 5K race.

Congratulations Girls!

Everyone at GOTR is extremely proud of all our girls this semester. On Sunday, Dec. 13th, we celebrated alongside 90 girls as they completed the Jingle Bell 5K. For most, this was their first race. It was a time to celebrate the power of self-confidence, being healthy and active, and accomplishing something big!

Girls
It was incredible to see all the girls cross the finish line with rosy cheeks and smiling faces. Each girl received a special finisher's medal, and had photos taken with their running buddy and proud parents. Photos from our event can be found HERE.

Thank you to all our volunteers who helped make the day a success!

On April 25, 2010 we will be hosting our first New Balance Girls on the Run 5K, which will be open for all runners.
Community Service
 Alamo Girls Singing
An important component to the GOTR curriculum is a community service project. This
semester, the girls from Alamo Recreation Center said they wanted to sing holiday songs to the elderly in their community.  On Dec. 15, the girls and their coach, Christol Castillo, went to the Maggie Johnson Nursing Center on E. 17th to sing songs to the residents. The joy the girls brought to everyone was incredible, especially as the residents began singing along. The Activities Director praised the girls' efforts to share the holiday spirit with them, and everyone sang "For (S)he's a Jolly Good Fellow" as the girls left.

Did You Know?

The Girl EffectThe Girl Effect, noun: The powerful social & economic change brought about when girls have the opportunity to particiapte.

While the primary focus of the Girl Effect is in developing countries, their work truly shows the power that lies in the hands of girls and women and many parallels can be drawn for girls and women right here in our own community. Such as:

  • An extra year of secondary school raises a girl's lifetime wages by 15-25%.
  • Children of educated women are healthier and more likely to stay in school.
  • A woman will reinvest 90% of her income into her family. A man will reinvest 30-40%.

Check out The Girl Effect for more information.
