Many girls in our target locations for next year are unable to pay and participate in the program. If you are interested in providing a program scholarship for girls enrolled in the Fall 2009 season, please visit our website and click the Donate button to make a donation. Scholarship amounts are from $25 to $125. A donation of $250 sponsors one girl for
one year.This amount goes
toward providing trained coaches, the GOTR curriculum, snacks, t-shirts and registration
fees needed to support the program. As part of our mission and commitment to Austin and surrounding
communities, we will bring the Girls on the Run program to all areas in need,
but we need your help.
About Girls on the Run
GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare pre-teen girls for a lifetime of self-respect, positive choices and healthy living. Over 12 weeks, girls are guided by trained volunteer coaches, and learn about the power of positive self-image. At the end of the semester, in celebration of their achievement, girls along with their families, coaches and volunteers participate in a local 5K race.

Common Characteristics of Eleven-Year-Olds
Elevens are going through huge changes in their bodies, minds, and social behavior as they begin adolescence. The easy friendliness of ten often gives way to the awkward, sometimes rude behavior at eleven. With their growing capacity for higher thinking, children this age like to try work that feels grown up, such as researching and interviewing.
SOCIAL:Moody, self-aborbed; Easily embarrassed; need to "save face" in front of peers; Sensitive about their changing bodies; Needs lots of time to talk to peers; Common age for girls to form cliques; Worry about who's "in" and who's "out"; Like to challenge rules, argue & test limits.
COGNITIVE: Can think abstractly; Beginning to challenge adult explanations and their own assumptions; Would rather learn new skills than review or improve previous work; Enjoy using their developing thinking skills to do brain teasers and puzzles; Like "adult" tasks, though may outwardly fuss while secretly enjoying the work.
PHYSICAL: Restless and very energetic; Need lots of food, physical activity and sleep; Growth spurt for many girls; some begin menstruating; "Growing pains" (bone outgrowing muscle) may cause nightly aches and daily complaints. More colds, ear infections, flu, etc.
