Girls Complete 5K
Our girls met up early on Sunday, May 3rd to run the Bun Run 5K. This marked the end of the Spring season, but was also the result of a lot of hard work over the last 12 weeks. The 5K is also a celebration and gives the girls the confidence in knowing that if they set their minds on a goal, they can achieve anything - they just have to keep moving forward.

During the race, girls collected keychain charms and beads as incentives for completing each mile. Once they finished the girls were given charms that read: Laugh Often, Love Much, Be Kind, Be Good, and Be Yourself - messages all the coaches at Girls on the Run felt honored the mission of our program.

After the race, the girls along with their friends and families joined in an awards ceremony where girls received certificates of completion. One parent commented, "She absolutely loves this program, and looks forward to the lessons every week. I cannot begin to tell you the positive changes we've seen in her."

About Girls on the Run
GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare pre-teen girls for a lifetime of self-respect, positive choices and healthy living. Over 12 weeks, girls are guided by trained volunteer coaches, and learn about the power of positive self-image. At the end of the semester, in celebration of their accomplishments, girls along with their families, coaches and volunteers participate in a local 5K race.
Congratulations to all the girls who completed the Schlotzky'sGirls with Bun Bun Run on May 3rd. We are so proud to end our 2nd season with some amazing girls who have accomplished so much this semester. Thanks also to the families, teachers, school coordinators, coaches and volunteers who made the day run smoothly.

A very special thank you to the Running Buddies who paired with our runners and encouraged them to move forward out on the race course. We could not have done it without you!

Thanks also to Panera Bread for donating bagels and our sponsor, Hill Country Cupcake, for donating healthy, organic finish line cupcakes.

Sincerely,

Shorey Russell

Paggi House Happy HourOur most recent fundraiser at Paggi House was a huge success. Response from the Austin American Statesman article drew new guests, and once again, our raffle items were a big hit. A big thanks to all who participated, and to Paggi House for hosting the event and becoming our newest corporate sponsor.

THIS JUST IN...
Mark your calendars for a huge fundraising event we are hosting with The Nelson Project on Thursday August 13th from 5:30-8pm. The event will be held at the Gibson Entertainment Showroom on South Congress in Austin. The showroom is absolutely amazing, and we are in the process of booking a well-known band. The event will be catred with an open bar, and we will have a silent auction. Ticket purchases can be made on our website soon. Contact shorey@gotraustin.org if you have donated items for our silent auction.
Did you know?
Overweight and unpopular as a child, the now 27-year old Stephanie Hood remembers having a negative self-image until she found running in high school. By her senior year in college she was racing for the pure joy of it. Asked why she continues to run, Hood says, "Because I love it so much."

Hood earned All-American status with a 16:50 5000M at the 2003 NCAA championships. Today she is an elite runner who placed first among the North American women at Boston in 2008 with a time of 2:44.
