A Sample Lesson
A couple of weeks ago, the lesson at Bridge Point was about bullying. The girls started the lesson answering the question: What is bullying? The girls learned there are three types of bullying:
  1. Physical
  2. Emotional
  3. Verbal
Next, the girls divided into two teams and were each given a card with a type of bullying written on it. When the head coach called out an example of bullying that matched the type on card the girl was holding, she ran 25 yards to a cone, and then ran back. This relay race was the warm up, and the girls really cheered each other on, and had fun.

After some stretching, the girls then broke into teams of 3-4 and took turns writing down examples of bullying & how they should handle it. They also learned that bullying (both giving & receiving) can escalate and lead to other outcomes: poor grades, being expelled, dropping out of school, and isolation among classmates.

Finally, for the workout, the girls ran laps and each time they passed a coach, they would give an example of bullying and what they would do if it happened to them. Examples the girls gave included talking to parents, telling a friend, and avoiding situations that might involve a known bully. Oh, and the girls LOVE to be chased!

After more than a mile of running, the girls stretched, and the lesson was over.
About Girls on the Run
GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to help prepare pre-teen girls for a lifetime of self-respect, positive choices and healthy living. Over 12 weeks, girls are guided by trained volunteer coaches, and learn about the power of positive self-image. At the end of the semester, in celebration of their accomplishments, girls along with their families, coaches and volunteers participate in a local 5K race. On May 3rd, we'll be at the Bun Run.

Bun RunAs we near the end of the school semester we have been busy, busy, busy with fundraising, planning some fun events, and motivating the girls for the upcoming Bun Run 5K on May 3rd. Thanks to the Bun Run organizers for offering discounts to our Running Buddies & registrations for our girls.

A huge thanks to everyone who supported us by shopping at Bettysport & Rogue on our "shopping day" last month - once again, it was a great success!

And a very special thank you to Rockford Business Interiors for the use of their offices for our April Board Meeting.

Sincerely,

SoleMates
Last month we featured an article about our charity running program. SolematesThe program, now called SoleMates,  consists of male and female athletes who pursue individual goals, such as running a marathon or completing a triathlon, to raise money for Girls on the Run of Austin so it can continue to serve its mission of preparing and educating girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.

You can be a member of SoleMates for any athletic event, whether you are planning to run, walk, bike, swim, or do a combination. The minimum fundraising level is only $262! It costs $26 to join, and you'll receive a technical shirt and your own website for fundraising. If you raise additional funds you'll receive extra benefits, such as FREE training, FREE running shoes, and FREE gear!!

More information on the program can be found at our website.
Did you know?
Leading causes of school dropouts in the Austin area in 2008 were attributed to:
  • Teen parenting and pregnancy
  • Drugs
  • Gang activity
  • Not feeling accepted or worthy
  • Feeling discouraged
  • Lack of friends
  • Negative peer pressure
Girls on the Run curriculum addresses all of these issues. Our coaches work directly with girls, parents, and schools to combat these issues. (source: AISD)
Nelson Project
The Nelson Project, a new sponsor for Girls on the Run of Austin, along with a leading lender, is hosting a FREE first time home buying seminar once a month. Join them on April 21 at 6:30 pm at the Keller Williams Office, 1801 S. Mopac Suite 100. The premise of the class is this:  with the $8k first-time homebuyer tax credit and interest rates at a historical low, we will look back on 2009 in Austin, TX and realize that was the year to buy.
