Volume 4, Edition 6                                  July 2012

Greetings!

Can you believe that summer is half over?  But - it seems the best is yet to come!  Check out the great events going on all over the state on the new state website. There are some terrific events being planned for foster and adoptive parents too.  Check out our website as well as your agency news for local information.

There's a short survey below that we hope you will take.  It is designed to help us find homes for teens.  It is brief and your responses will be anonymous.  Please do take 5 minutes to help us.  And if you have friends or relatives who foster - please pass this on to them and ask them to put in their two cents.  We need everyone's help on this!

Don't forget about the great support groups available for you.  Summers are hectic but can also be a time of additional stress due to the changes in kids' schedules and the increased amount of unstructured time.  Take care of yourselves!  Check out CAFAP's support group listing as well as the CT Adoption Community Network's listings.  There is sure to be one that fits your needs.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.  Stay cool!

Fostering Adolescents - Benefits and Barriers
Take our survey

Why, you ask?
Right now, today, 109 Connecticut youth wait in Safe Homes and shelters hoping for a home... a family... They need everyone's help to make their hopes a reality.

Could you please take a few moments to assist us?  We need YOU to tell us more about YOUR feelings about fostering adolescents - whether positive or negative.  We are looking for honest, thoughtful answers so that we can increase the chances of finding families for waiting adolescents.

Click here to access our anonymous survey.

Adolescents in Connecticut - and across the country - face incredible obstacles in finding families willing to connect with them.  This survey has been designed as a result of meetings conducted in Region 6 (New Britain/Meriden) with foster families, youth and providers. Our purpose was to identify ways to increase the number of homes available to adolescents in care.  Based on the results of this survey, DCF and their partners hope to find out more about the issues you consider most pressing and then bring about some meaningful changes resulting in more homes for youth.

Glam Day

This two day event has been specially created to offer young ladies in foster care ages 15 -21 an opportunity to experience the fun and glamor of a custom shopping experience with a personal stylist and a second day where each girl will be photographed by a professional photographer after having their hair and make-up professionally and tastefully done. Each young lady will leave with a complimentary 8x10 photo provided for her personal use.*

This event is limited to the first 20 respondents able to commit to both days.

A shopping day will be held on August 13 from 1-3 at the Brass Mill Center Mall. Young ladies need to be accompanied by an adult. Participants will be treated to a shopping experience with a personal stylist, who will assist each girl in choosing an appropriate "top" and accessories for their headshot. All purchases will be held for the girls by FAM staff until the date of the photo shoot. Meet-up information will be provided with RSVP.

"Glam Day" will be held on August 20 at the First Congregational Church of Cheshire, 111 Church Drive, Cheshire. Please plan to arrive between 10 and 10:30 a.m.

The event will end once all photos have been taken. Participants are welcome to stay until the event is over or may leave once their photos have been taken. Lunch will be provided. Foster and adoptive moms are welcome to stay and participate in the fun! makeup
