Volume 4, Edition 2                                  February 2012

Greetings!

Spring is almost here!  Change is in the air.  There is so much going on, it is hard to know where to start.

First, there are two new support groups starting, specifically for relative caregivers.  In New Haven, the Relative Providers Support Group will be meeting at JFS on Whalley Avenue monthly.  Click here for more information.  A second support group, Relatives As Parents, will be held on the 4th Monday of every month during the school day at Girls Inc. Of Southwestern Connecticut in Waterbury.  This group will be held in both English and Spanish.  Click here for details.  Another support group for fathers is beginning soon in the Bridgeport area.  Details are still being worked out.  Please check our event calendar in the coming weeks for details.

Save the date!  Our first annual Parents Night Out features the Movement of Imperfection speakers.  Sisters Patty Konjoian and Gina Gallagher, authors of the book,
Shut Up About Your Perfect Kid, are known for their humorous look at parenting.  Having attended a conference last fall where they spoke, I can enthusiastically recommend that you pencil in May 17th on your calendars.  I promise you will laugh all evening and leave refreshed and renewed!  Invitations will be available soon.

A number of conferences are coming up.  Debbie Riley, an acclaimed author and speaker will be coming to Connecticut in late March to present at two conferences.  Parents may want to sign up to hear her speak about: Adolescent Stuck Spots: Six Major Hurdles for the Adopted AdolescentClick here for more information.  Additionally, 'r kids Family Center in collaboration with the Adoption Community Network, and Casey Family Services presents a conference for mental health professionals and educators entitled: WHAT ABOUT ME TOO?  Click here for brochure.

It's not too early to begin thinking about summer camp.  Our friends at the CT Family Support Network have scheduled presentations across the state on camping opportunities for children with special needs.  You might want to attend one of these informative sessions and find out more about what is available for your children.  Click here for schedule.

Lastly, we would like to mention again our Everyone NeedsEveryone Needs a Nest logo A Nest project.  So many youth groups (Girl Scouts, church groups, birthday parties, etc.) have participated in the project to date as well as mother's groups, daycare providers groups and parent support groups.  If your child (or you) are part of a group and would like to schedule a painting party, give us a call or send an email and we will be sure to have someone follow up.  Click here for more information.

Thanks for reading!

 star of the month
Each month one of our member agencies
feature a "star" whose service to children in foster care
deserves special recognition.
Stars receive a small gift from FAM and a certificate of appreciation from the nominating agency. This month we share a family from our partner, Community Residences Inc. (CRI).

CRI would like to take this space to recognize one of our "star" foster parents. Jeannette Newhart has been a therapeutic foster parent through CRI since September of 2006 and has long been recognized as being one of CRI's exceptional foster parents. Jeannette is a very experienced foster mom who gives every child in her care her best efforts. She is structured and disciplined in her parenting style but knows how to have fun and show how much she cares for the kids under her roof. She is a long time resident of Wolcott and is very familiar with community resources, counseling services, and the educational system.

Jeannette is a strong advocate for the children in her care and is relentless in her mission to ensure the children's needs are met. She is very selfless and always puts the children's needs before her own. She has also been a very supportive resource for other foster parents in her area who are experiencing difficult times with their own placements, or who just need someone to talk to about their foster care experience.  Jeannette has experience dealing with difficult kids and teenagers, and is knowledgeable about many of the mental health issues presented by kids requiring therapeutic foster care. She is always available to help other foster parents by providing respite whenever needed, and is often the first foster parent a social worker will think of when needing a resource for a challenging child.

Jeannette has a great, positive approach to foster parenting and has made a huge impact in the lives of the children she has cared for. Jeannette has been a great asset to CRI for more than five years and we look forward to continuing to work with her in the future.

Kids' Brains Impacted by Parental Alcohol Use
LiveScience Article

"Adolescent brains respond to risky situations differently if the teen's parents are alcoholics, new research finds.

While preceding studies have shown that adolescents with a family history of alcoholism (FHP) are at a risk for developing alcohol-abuse disorders and that drinking increases risky decision-making, the new study is the first to look at risk-taking behaviors among FHP teens who have never drunk alcohol themselves..."  Click here to read the rest of this article.

Words of Wisdom

When you let go of trying to get more of what you don't really need,
it frees up oceans of energy to make a difference with what you have.
When you make a difference with what you have,
 it expands.
