Poem of the Month

baby birds

The Nest

Our souls cry out to the baby birds who need a nest

There is something inside us that yearns to hold them

And shelter them

And heal them.

For a place in our nests has always been waiting for them.

We give them love,

These frail birds with broken wings who arrive at our doors

Feathers missing,

Dirty,

Broken,

Bloodied,

Hungry.

Sometimes chirping,

Sometimes silent,

Always watchful.

We fall in love with their eyes, sometimes blank, sometimes hurting.

We clean them up.

We bandage their wounds.

We feed their souls.

Our nest provides a safe resting place

Where they can heal

And grow

And gain strength

And courage

And learn how to love gently.

And so they discover

That love can soothe

And warm

And heal their brittle, angry hearts.

Their feathers begin to shine once more.

No longer do they hide their eyes in the brilliant sunshine.

Instead, they look out into the world

Bright,

 Inquisitive,

 Searching gazes,

Curious about all the world has to offer them

Curious about the nest they left behind

Curious about the future.

Then the baby bird steps out

Shrieking to linger awhile longer

Or reluctantly, unsure of the future outside of the nest

Or tentatively, hopeful but wary

Or boldly, sure and strong.

They do so carrying the strength of our nests within them

Whether they know it or not.

Our hearts,

 Both full and shattered

Joyful and wounded

Soon heal

Never to be the same

Grown larger,

Grown softer,

Grown wiser.

And we are, oh, so glad of the difference.

For with every baby bird who flies from our nests

Our souls also take flight

Circling,

Widening,

Invisibly wrapping each baby bird in the protection our nest briefly offered

Til we almost touch heaven

Knowing that for a time

However brief,

A baby bird

Was

Safe.

Volume 3, Edition 2                                      February 2011

Greetings! FAM Balloons

Soon spring will be here.  If your family is like mine - you cannot wait to see the first crocuses.  Winter has certainly taken a toll on Connecticut this year.

I would like to remind you to please participate in our survey before it closes in mid-March.  We will be using your responses to plan our future events.

Be sure to visit the iFoster website.  You can sign up at no charge (totally free!) for discounts at local and national retailers.  I signed up and true to their word, the process only took a day or so.  I can't wait to use my discounts!

Heather Forbes, critically acclaimed author of Beyond Consequences, Logic and Control will be presenting during a one-day conference on March 10.  This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for parents to learn more about parenting challenging children.  Download the brochure to learn more.

Check in on our website calendar over the next few weeks.  We are busy planning fantastic National Foster Care Month celebrations during May.  New events are being loaded on the website weekly.  Next month we will publish a coupon for Foster Family Appreciation Day at Quassy Amusement Park on May 1.  Save the date!  Quassy has a new roller coaster which is sure to be a hit with the kids.

Our new support group for adoptive parents is slowly growing.  Please join us this month for our discusion on the book, Adopting the Hurt Child.  All adoptive parents as well as kinship caregivers are welcome.  Our next meeting will be on March 16th at the Prospect Public Library at 7 pm.  If you would like a reminder email to be sent to you for the support group simply respond to this newsletter with "Ring of Hope" in the subject line and your email address will join the reminder list.

Last, we would like to hear from you and the children you raise.  We know there are lots of talented young people out there.  If any of youth in your house would like an opportunity to publish their work, please hit respond to this newsletter and attach their work.  We will publish works that are "family-rated" in upcoming issues.

Best wishes,

A new resource available to foster/adoptive families in Connecticut has shared their brochure with us.

iFoster.org is now LIVE, FREE, and exclusively for the FOSTER CARE COMMUNITY!!!!

At iFoster, we believe those who open their hearts and homes to children in foster care are unsung heroes. You shoulder the responsibility of raising over 500,000 of our most vulnerable children. And you do so despite a system that often provides less than half of what it costs to raise a child.

iFoster is here to help. Our programs provide financial relief as well as opportunities for growth & learning that have too often been unattainable luxuries for children in foster care.

Join us and save! Our first program can save the average household over $4,500 a year with free discounts at national and local retailers, grocery stores, healthcare providers(medical, dental, vision), restaurants, movie theatres, and attractions. We've brought the benefits program used by Fortune 500 companies to the foster care community. If you are a family (foster, resource, kin, guardian, adoptive), a transition age youth (16-21), or organization (e.g. group home, transitional housing, CASA) supporting children in foster care, we invite you to join for free!

We will continue to expand our discounts and negotiate the deals that are of particular interest to you. And coming soon, we will be launching our program to provide clothing, school supplies, and basic necessities through our virtual depot and online marketplace.

 star of the month

Each month one of our member agencies feature a "star" whose service to children in foster care

deserves special recognition.
Stars receive a small gift from FAM and a certificate of appreciation from the nominating agency. This month our partner, Family Services of Greater Waterbury, is honoring one of their own.

When I think about who is one of the strongest child advocates I know, Laurie Reisman is always the person who comes to mind first.  Laurie is a dedicated Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is the Director of Operations at Family Services of Greater Waterbury where she has provided her professional talents for over 20 years.  Laurie has played a key role in developing programs to serve children and their families who have experienced abuse, neglect, mental illness, and/or family violence.  She has supervised and mentored staff to treat every person with dignity and respect with an emphasis on how to nurture and support each individual as we strive to strengthen their lives.

Laurie is a strong believer in partnering with local and state initiatives that promote safe and stable living environments for all children and the diverse family settings caring for them.  She has testified at the Legislature regarding the needs of children with mental illness to advocate for our lawmakers to make the right decisions on what is in the best interest of children with unique and special needs.  She strives for professional excellence each and every day.

In addition to her dedicated support to the clients and staff, Laurie walks the walk in her personal life as well.  After having two beautiful girls of their own, Laurie and her husband, Doug, became foster parents and soon adopted their youngest child who continues to thrive today.  Laurie and Doug also welcomed into their home a 19 year old girl who grew up in DCF's care, was successfully attending college and had nowhere to live during the summer breaks and recesses.  This young woman has become part of the Reisman family and continues to "come home" during each break from her college studies.  In addition, they took into their home a single mom and her young daughter until they could get back on their feet.  I do not know of many families would open their hearts and their home to others in need in the way they do.

In Laurie's spare time, she teaches at Naugatuck Valley Community College to inspire and educate students seeking to understand the how they can make a difference in the community in which they live and work.

Laurie is a true hero to the social work profession and I am proud of all of her many accomplishments and dedication to helping others have a happy and productive life.

Avenue of Dreams Prom Event for Foster/Adopted Teens

The 2nd annual prom event, "Avenue of Dreams," sponsored by The CT Association of Foster and Adoptive Parents, Inc. (CAFAP) will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Saint Clement Castle in Portland, CT. Set in the style of fashion and glamour, there is no charge for foster or adoptive teen girls and one adult guest to attend the event.

More than 70 foster and adoptive teens will participate in this day that includes a free prom gown, makeovers, spa services, a mother and teen workshop and luncheon. This is a day for these girls to not only receive a dress and some fashion tips to leave with, but a day for them to be pampered and treated like a princess.

The community (professionals, merchants, employees, and numerous volunteers) comes together to make this event an annual success and a special day the teens will never forget. These young people together to share their experiences, strengths, and hopes with other foster and adoptive teens. It lets them know they are not special and deserve the same prom opportunities as other youth.

Those interested in donating beauty or any related services. Or anyone interested in hosting a prom gown drive or making a dress donation, please contact Heather LaCasse at 860.258.3400.
