Spring Cannot Come Soon Enough!

I hope that this newsletter finds you all safe and snug inside warm homes.  As much as I love the snow, I am sure I am not alone in hoping that there are no more snow days!  Kids thrive on consistency in their schedules and the weather this past month definitely has not provided much of that.  To the right you will notice a photo taken at a Family Fun Day at Quassy.  I hope it brings you comfort to know that summer will be here before we know it!

There are two events highlighted for February.  Ring of Hope is a FAM support group for adoptive families - whether licensed or not.  And By Us, For Us, is a GLBTQI support group hosted by our partners at Klingberg Family Centers.  We hope to see some of you in February at one of these meetings.  Check our website in weeks to come as more events will be added shortly!

Last, but certainly not least, please remember to have high school seniors of color who have been or are in foster care apply for the Kay Wyrick Scholarship by the application deadline of April 1st.  Seniors must intend to major in a field related to working with children in their communities such as social work, or criminal justice.  The scholarship application is available on our website for download.

Hoping for warm, sunny days,

Take Our Survey

Foster and Adoptive Family Survey

Together with our partners at Hearts, Hands and Homes, FAM has put together a brief survey for families to take.  The results of the survey are anonymous and will be shared with our agency partners and with you.  We really need your help to  better serve your needs.   We encourage all families

to take the survey, regardless of whether or not you are licensed, pre-licensed, or no longer licensed.   The survey is also available in Spanish (through the same link.)

The survey will close in mid-March so we will be sharing preliminary results with you in the March newsletter.

pregnant woman Teen Pregnancy Prevention

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is working on important

research on the prevalence of pregnancy among foster teens.  According to their website:

There are important reasons why people who care for and about children in foster care should place the prevention of early pregnancy high on their list of concerns. Teens in foster care, many of whom suffered abuse and neglect before leaving their homes, are more likely to get pregnant than teens outside the system. In fact, teen girls in foster care are 2.5 times more likely than their peers not in foster care to get pregnant by age 19 and half of 21-year-old men aging out of foster care report they had gotten someone pregnant compared with 19 percent of their peers who were not in the system.

They have published two brochures - one for teens and the other for foster parents - that will assist you with this important issue.  They also have produced an informative video on the subject.  Some of the statistics are startling.  Please click here to visit our website page to view the video and print the brochures.

prescription drugs

Psychotropic Medication and Foster Children

Check out this Need to Know video produced by PBS.  (Excerpt below

 taken from pbs.org website)

The Watch List: The Medication of Foster Children

Nearly one in every 10 American children is diagnosed with a mental health disorder. Often the treatment prescribed is medication, and often the medication is heavy-duty - so-called antipsychotic drugs.

In this report, you'll see that foster care children are prescribed drugs at a rate much greater than that of other kids. Concern over their well-being - not to mention the amount it costs to treat them - has prompted the Government Accountability Office to investigate potentially abusive prescribing practices in America's state foster care systems. The GAO findings are expected to come out later this year..... Foster Club All StarsFosterClub Searching for "All Stars"

FosterClub is a national organization composed of over 20,000 members consisting of foster and former foster youth, and their allies.  Their goal is to support and improve the lives of foster youth.  Every year they sponsor "All Stars" who serve as interns.  A link to their website appears below for those interested in exploring this internship on behalf of a deserving CT youth.  Applications are due by February 15.

"A team of young people age 18- 24 will be selected to serve a summer internship with FosterClub and assist in planning and facilitating Independent living Teen Conferences and other foster care and child welfare events held throughout the country. Youth will be selected to represent a diversity in foster care experiences, education, current paths (college, employment, job corps, etc.), race & ethnicity and geographical location. All applicants must have spent time in the foster care system. Each will demonstrate leadership potential and ability to connect with peers...." Click here to read the rest of this story...

Bath saltsAbuse of Bath Salts

The federal government has issued a warning about the growing use of bath salts or their legally sold ingredients to get high.  At least 25 states have reported documented abuse of this new craze.

FULTON, Miss. - When Neil Brown got high on dangerous chemicals sold as bath salts, he took his skinning knife and slit his face and stomach repeatedly. Brown survived, but authorities say others haven't been so lucky after snorting, injecting or smoking powders with such innocuous-sounding names as Ivory Wave, Red Dove and Vanilla Sky....To read the rest of this Huffington Post article click here .

In the stillness of the quiet,

if we listen,

we can hear the whisper of the heart giving strength to weakness,

courage to fear,

hope to despair.
