Family Fun Day 2009 A Great Success!
August 7, 2009 dawned bright and sunny - in short, a gorgeous summer day. Over 100 excited families arrived at Quassy Amusement Park itching to ride the rides, share lunch and chat with friends. FAM staff and Ralph, a 40 year veteran of the Quassy staff, checked the families in and led them to an amazing display of stuffed animals donated through the generosity of the young ladies of Miss Porter's School in Farmington, led by senior, Pippa Biddle. Children pored over the laden tables and chose from hundreds of teddy bears, Beanie Babies, Disney characters and cuddly creatures. Then each child signed a huge card thanking Miss Porter's students, tucked their choice under their arms and ran off to join the festivities.

Soon the clowns arrived. Delighted youngsters lined up to have faces painted. While the kids were busy, FAM recruiter, Alan Murphy, with the help of Inspiration in Motion of Meriden, interviewed and videotaped foster and adoptive parents. Parents spoke with great passion regarding their experiences as foster/adoptive resources. Once edited, these short vignettes will be used to encourage others to become resources for CT's children.
As always, the day was a huge success. So many families stopped to share their delight with staff at the quality of the food, the kindness of the staff and most of all, the great fun the children (and adults) were having. One longtime foster parent commented, "This has to be the nicest day we have ever had here. The weather is perfect. The kids are having such a great time that we are planning to stay til closing." Another parent sent an email to thank FAM after the event. She wrote, "I just wanted to thank you for the beautiful and lovely event at Quassy this past Friday. We had a beautiful day for it and both me and my family enjoyed it very much and we had a beautiful time, The food (especially the chicken) was very good."
Family Fun Day is just one of many events FAM sponsors for foster and adoptive families every year. Our next scheduled event is the Best Buddies Friendship Walk on October 17 in North Haven. Hope to see many of you there!

What is EMPS?
No one could argue that we live in a world that presents challenges we need to face almost on a daily basis. Especially foster parents, who must constantly adjust to changes that can make them feel alone and confused. Unfortunately, children and adolescents may have a more difficult time expressing their thoughts, needs and feelings than we do as adults. This difficulty often times can lead to behaviors that can be disconcerting and downright scary. Violent outbursts, suicidal and/or homicidal thoughts, emotional withdrawal are some behaviors that can accompany these difficulties for youth, and foster children are no exception. Where can one turn to for help? The first line of defense will always be the child's case worker and/or their psychiatric services provider. However, when an emergency presents itself, foster parents (as well as other members of the community at large) have another option - an option available 24 hours a day. One of the programs offered through Wellpath, a FAM partner, is Emergency Mobile Psychiatric Services (EMPS). The purpose of EMPS is to provide community-based rapid emergency crisis stabilization to children and families and to provide brief follow-up care to promote continued stabilization and linkage with ongoing supports and services within the community. Effective crisis intervention reduces the need for emergency department visits, police involvement and arrest, psychiatric hospitalization, and continued or repeated crisis intervention. Professional staff is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for intervention, counseling information and referral services to help with suicidal, behavioral and other violent threats, loss of control, and traumatic experiences. EMPS through Wellpath serves the 42 cities and towns within the Greater Waterbury, Danbury and Torrington areas of Connecticut (Northwest Region). EMPS Services are also available in the New Britain region of the state through Wheeler Clinic. Both Wheeler Clinic and Wellpath report only limited use of their EMPS service by licensed foster and adoptive families, although recently, those numbers have increased due to outreach directly to families and social workers. FAM wants foster and adoptive families to know that EMPS can be a valuable tool for families and children who need quick support after agency offices close.
So, what would a response from EMPS look like? Between the hours of 8 a.m. (9a.m. for Wellpath) and 10 p.m., the hours a crisis is statistically most likely to occur, a call to EMPS would result in a home visit by a trained team. This team would evaluate the situation and make a determination of how to proceed. Once the evaluation is done the assigned clinician would work with the family until the case is handed over to the appropriate service (like IICAPS or FST) or mental health professional. If the call came in after 10 p.m., on-call staff would provide phone support and appropriate referral to either 911, a home visit the following morning, or other support as deemed necessary. Holiday support services are also available. In home support is covered from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. with telephone coverage for the remainder of the day. To access EMPS, ANYONE can simply dial 2-1-1 toll free 24 hours a day. Any further non-emergent questions about the Wellpath EMPS program can be directed to Mark Augustine, LMFT who can be reached at (203) 756-7287 extension 224 or by e-mail at maugustine@wellpathct.org. Information regarding the Wheeler Clinic EMPS can be obtained by calling Sarah Becker at Wheeler Clinic at 860-793-3500.

Scary movies anyone?
Ebbie longs for someone to stick it out with her...could that someone be you? Elba, or "Ebbie" as she likes to be called, is a beautiful Caucasian 13 year old girl who is legally free for adoption. She loves basketball, shopping, going out to eat and scary movies and stories. Ebbie describes herself as "funny, creative, and friendly". She is also very caring and enjoys being with others. Ebbie is looking to be a part of a family and hopes that her forever family will be active and open to contact with her sister, whom she has a very close relationship with. Ebbie has experienced a great deal of trauma and loss in her life and needs a family that can understand her feelings and provide support to her while she is struggling. Right now she needs a resource family who will spend time getting to know her with the hopes of moving toward adoption in the future. If you are interested in learning more about Ebbie, please contact Pam Williams at (860) 621-7600 x237 or pwilliams@criinc.org. |
Fosterware Parties!
Do you like to have fun? Are you looking for an excuse to hold a party? And have you ever wondered what you could do to help find homes for waiting kids? Consider hosting a Fosterware party. These parties are based on the Tupperware home party concept and not only are they fun but they are designed to provide information to partygoers about ways they can help children in foster care.
FAM presenters come to your home and talk with groups of three or more of your friends and neighbors about our foster care and adoption programs. Our presenter makes a brief presentation and brings literature and goodies for all partygoers. Hosting families are given a gift card to cover the cost of food and drinks.
Please help us find good homes for great kids! We promise you'll have fun and you'll be opening your home and heart for a good cause.
Contact Deb Kelleher at 203-706-0101 or e-mail her to schedule a party.

Our Vacation
Swaying Seagulls sigh and say
Sometimes I like to fly over the beach
And go ca-cah, ca-cah.
The sea swishes, swish-slop
And beautiful fish pop up
And I lay on the sand and before I knew it
I had left the burning sand on the beach
And walked rapidly back to our cottage
And left the great Matunuck Beach
The tan-ish and dark blue-ish sandy beach
and churning water at Matunuck Beach.
