Who We Are...

Our vision: We are a welcoming people,

following Christ's example by

...journeying to encounter the Holy,

...live faithfully, and

 ...do justice.

Our purpose: We are a community of faithful, diverse, progressive Christians, gathering on Capitol Hill, experiencing spiritual formation that compels us to action.

Two key elements for our faith are spiritual formation and ministry.  In saying "spiritual formation," I mean intentionally investing in spiritual disciplines and practices to be responsively open to the Spirit of God that we may grow in the love of God to experience the fullness of life.  For "ministry," I mean to faithfully respond to God in displaying the love and grace of God, found Global Communityin the Gospel, in concrete, real acts to people and creation.  A traditional and simple phrase for these together is "to be filled that we may be poured out."  Our intentionally seeking to grow in our faith that we live it is essential.  On an individual level, we find that God transforms as we seek spiritual growth and allow God's love to be expressed through us to others.  Collectively, vital congregational life includes hopeful vision, faith oriented enthusiasm, prayer and ministry that moves us to serve beyond our own wants that we may act with the Spirit.

For all the brick and mortar, the dollars and cents, the pews and pulpit, the kitchen and roof and doors and books, it is our faithful and intentional effort to do simple things that matter most.  (Simple is not always easy)  To be filled that we may be poured out with God's love.  This transforms.  Some congregations have gotten lost in making second things first, making minors majors as they run and serve institutions.  Not AllJourneying Pilgrims!  We are a faithful people who long to truly be Church on Capitol Hill and to all the world.  So, it is no surprise as you are faithfully on the Way as we journey together that our life and impact is expanding.

Interfaith ministry and our maturing relationship with the IMAN Center, a Muslim community of faith.

Worship and Wonder - journeying with kids to encounter the Holy.

Gardening Ministry - expressing creation's beauty and care for Holy ground to those who pass.

Greeting Ministry - the loving and gracious first expression on Sunday.

College of Spirituality - courses to exercise and deepen faith.

Council -  Leading as servants of God, vision and purpose.

Hospitality and Clusters - serving to provide a hospitable place for people to love one another.

Choir -  an expression of worship that leads and moves others.

Men's Prayer Group - opening to be filled with the Spirit.

Community Supper - preparing food and providing a meal as Jesus among the "least of these" comes with hunger and more.

Deepening roots, expanding branches, and plentiful fruit.

This Fall, I invite you to do some things differently.  Take steps to spiritual growth.  Intentionally seek to serve to extend the love and compassion of God to others.  Spiritual formation and ministry... good for the soul.

Second Worship starting OCTOBER 2nd at 9am!

Come and be a part of expanding our worship offering to welcome and include more people as we move to encounter the Holy, journey together, and act in ministry to serve and transform the world.  During the fellowship time throughout September, there will be sign-up sheets to gather names of people willing and/or wanting to attend any or all 9am services to help build a core of the worshiping body.  Our goal is to have 25 signed up who are willing to be the welcoming, compassionate presence for others to join.  This will be an intentional ministry effort to God's worshipful embrace to others who come to worship.  Some will choose to worship at one worship while others will choose to be at both.  Either way, being part of God's expanding movement at and through All Pilgrims will be a beautiful, enriching way to serve.

Sign-up for SECOND WORSHIP in September!

Invitation

  • Commit to worship as a weekly discipline at either, or both services through Christmas.
  • Prayerfully consider how to support and serve on Sunday morning.
  • Sign-up for participating in one, or more, 9am worship experiences.
Interfaith Events this Fall

Interfaith activity around Seattle has been picking up steam, and All Pilgrims will be in the thick of it this fall. The Interfaith Action team will be promoting two events in particular:

  • Lesley Hazleton, author, psychologist, and veteran journalist, will give a talk at All Pilgrims on common Jewish Christian Muslimthemes in Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.  Ms. Hazleton is the author of 11 books and numerous articles in The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, Time, Esquire, Vanity Fair, The Nation, The New Republic, Salon, and other publications.  Her most recent work has centered on the way religion and politics, past and present, are inextricably intertwined in the Middle East.

  • We're organizing a movie night with our friends from the IMAN community in Kirkland.  We will watch the film A History of God and join in a discussion after the screening.  A History of God, adapted from the book by History of Godnoted religion scholar Karen Armstrong and produced by the History Channel, tells the story of how the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) developed in the ancient Middle East. Some of us watched the film together two years ago; this time we have an opportunity to see it again and compare our thoughts with those of our Muslim friends.

Watch for further announcements of these events.  We haven't yet settled on an exact date and time for either, but the Lesley Hazleton talk will probably be in late September or early October, and the movie night at IMAN will probably be in late October or early November.

We'd also like to call your attention to an interfaith observance of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in Kirkland.  "Ashes to Hope: An Interfaith Observance of 9/11" will take place at the Kirkland Performance Center, 350 Kirkland Avenue.  Sponsors are IMAN and the Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church.  A number of other eastside faith communities will be participating, along with the mayor, fire chief, and police chief of Kirkland. Time: 1:00-2:30 pm on Sunday, September 11.  For more details, please contact David Paul, 206-522-1309 or davidwpaul@alumni.princeton.edu

Thank You Rainbow Card

Thank You!

The memorial tree has been removed from the Sanctuary and planted in Bob's memory.  Our family will gather around it in West Seattle for a dedication.  It's been named "Papa Pine"  Thank you once again for all of your love, support and prayers after Bob's passing.  Blessings to all of you as we continue our ministry together......Berlena Brock
Bill Hays

Remembering Bill Hays

With great sadness, we announce that Bill Hays, much loved former member and treasurer of All Pilgrims Christian Church, died on his birthday, August 11, 2011.  Bill and Jean, his childhood sweetheart and wife of 49 years, moved to Tucson seven years ago.  After a massive hemorrhagic stroke in 2003, Bill miraculously recovered to become an avid golfer, walker, and a regular at his gym.

Bill was noted for his dry wit, his immense warmth, his diplomacy, and his gentle heart.  He could be counted on for a rousing conversation or pat on the back.

Besides a passion for his family, Bill was an adventurous traveler who especially loved spending time with the locals in his favorite Mexican village.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Jean and Bill's beloved son and daughter, Will and Ashley.  Jean believed that the power of prayer is what helped Bill through his stroke; we hope that our prayers will help Jean, Will, and Ashley through this immeasurable loss.

Cards may be sent to Jean Hays, 13665 N. Pima Spring Way, Oro Valley, AZ 85755.

You can go to www.vistosofuneralhome.com to see the full obituary and sign the remembrance book.
