Pentecost Is Coming!

This year, it is June 12 that marks the day of the birth of the Church, as found in the Book of Acts.  Followers of Jesus wait with hope in Jerusalem, as they had been instructed to do, and then they come to experience a Soulquake that moves and infuses them with new life and mission.

There are different postures that we may assume as we wait.  While not exhaustive, they include a sort of passive Waitingwaiting with an intention to simply observe, or see, what presents itself, as well as a more assertive waiting that implies a readiness to move and respond when opportunity presents itself.  The difference is like two people wanting to travel to Spokane who show up at the train station with hope a train headed to that destination will come.  After a time of waiting, the train to Spokane arrives.  One person picks up her bags and boards, the other, not having prepared or brought bags, turns and goes home.  "Why would anyone want to ride the train to Spokane?" you ask.  That's not the point. (Just kidding.  Much love to Spokane.  No email necessary.)  The point is that there is a difference in the preparation and readiness to respond.  Remember, each wanted to move to the same destination, not stay.  Faith is on the move, even while waiting, packing her bags, preparing herself and confident that when the train shows, she will step on.

A wonderful characteristic found in the disciples is that they followed; simple as that!  It wasn't that they'd wait to see what they could reasonably understand and accept.  It wasn't that they'd wait and see how it all worked out in the end before they took some risk.  And, it wasn't that they'd see if Jesus did what they wanted and liked.  These things didn't occur.  They had different ideas as toForward In Faith how things should be and what a Messiah should do, they weren't sure how things would go or if they'd work out, and much of their time was spent asking Jesus to explain himself and his behavior....again, so they might understand.  However, they did all of this faithfully on the move with him.  Which brings us to faith - it implies movement.  It implies faithfully opening to God's call and expecting to be moved, to go.

God is a God of new beginnings.  The question is not "Will God move?"  Rather, it is "Are we ready to be moved and (let) go?"  At Pentecost, the followers of Jesus were moved, and they went into a remarkable mission that must have been hard to imagine, especially when it so intimately relied on "little ole' us."  But, they did, and this week we recognize our link to that day and, among other things, give thanks for those who had the bold and faithful hope to pack and bring their bags to that room in Jerusalem.

In this time, expect that God is moving in your life. (Yes, you.)  As I've said, if God has a wallet, your picture is in it.  Well, adoring your picture and the future you may have, God moves to call you to it.  Einstein once said, "There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle."  In the miracle of your life, expect and see God moving to offer new beginnings, and hope for such Soulquakes and opportunities with a readiness to move.  Next steps on your journey!

All Pilgrims is a place that is always and amazingly at the ready to step to the call of God.  That is why "journey" Faith Journeyis such a prevalent theme for us.  Assertively faithful!  This makes for good travel partners.  Let us find ways to grow in and be filled with God's love that we may overflow to a world that desperately needs it.  Onward!

Bob worked for the YMCA for some years, and was director of YMCA youth camps in Manchester, N.H. and  South Bend, IN.  He worked as a YMCA Branch Executive Director in  Richmond, VA.  Also in Richmond he worked as Procedures and Work Measurement Analyst for BEST Products.  He later moved to Baton Rouge, where he was Manager of Corporate Services for H.J. Wilson.  He became a founding member of the Baton Rouge MCC.

In 1984 Bob began working for The Home Depot in Atlanta.  He was Senior Manager of Corporate Services with them until his retirement.  In Atlanta Bob was active Bob Kinneyat All Saints MCC, where he was a deacon.  He was also a staunch supporter of BALM Ministries.

In 1998 Bob moved to Seattle, WA., where he became involved as a volunteer for the Seattle Men's Chorus and served on many boards and committees at All Pilgrims Christian Church.  He was active at fundraising for the church organ.

In 2007 he moved to Charleston, where he volunteered at Grace Episcopal Church at the Gifts of Grace Bookshoppe and the annual Grace Tea Room.  He also supported different community organizations such as AFFA and LAS with his time and in-kind gifts.  He later returned to the workforce at Publix Supermarket on Dorchester Road, working as a cashier and in the Aprons program.

Bob was a great lover of dogs and rescued many, giving them a wonderful home and a life better than any they had known.  He was always a warmhearted and generous person, freely giving aid to those in need.  He was deeply loyal to his friends, of which he had many all over the country.

Bob died of heart complications in his home on May 5th, 2011.  He is survived by his first cousins Betsy K. Hamre of Spokane, WA and Susan K. Hunter of Venice, Florida; his family of choice; and many, many friends. His passing leaves a gap in our lives that can never be filled.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Charleston on Saturday, May 28 at 1:00 pm.  It was Bob's request that this should be a celebration of life, with people dressed in bright colors.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Grace Flower Guild, the SPCA, or the Heart or Diabetes foundations.

Pentecost Offering 2011

All are welcome! Come as you are!

These are key phrases that reach out, one way of telling our community who we are.  Pentecost Offering

In some ways we are unique, but in others we are a clear expression of our Christian heritage.  In particular, as a congregation we embody principles developed and cherished by our parent denominations, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, including: open communion, Christian Unity, honoring all baptisms, congregational polity, supporting one another in developing our own understandings of God and scripture in community, understanding that all of us share the gifts and responsibility for ministry.

This coming Sunday is Pentecost, when we celebrate the day the holy spirit entered the followers of Christ and gave birth to their life as the Church.  We joined our identies to theirs eight years ago when All Pilgrims officially came into being on Pentecost, so each year we celebrate our "birthday" by honoring the larger church in our worship and our offerings.

The special offering we receive  that day goes "above and beyond" our usual tithes, pledges and offerings.  We stretch to give to the larger forms of Church that support us in our ministries so that they can continue to support us, congregations in our region and conference, across our continent and around the world.  I hope you will join in and give.

Congratulations to Stephan & Muriel!

Muriel Saunders and Stephan Gerhardt gave themselves to one another in marriage on Friday, May 27th.  The ceremony took place at All Pilgrims Christian Church in the presence of immediate family and friends. The wedding was officiated by pastor Greg Turk. Following the wedding, Muriel and Stephan hosted a celebratory meal at their home for family and friends.

 Congratulations

Blessings to you both for many years of happiness!

News from Community Lunch

We have been very busy in the past few months, with Thursday suppers now offered every week at All Pilgrims Church and the number of guests growing every week.   Stop by and eat with us, Thursdays at 5pm -- it is a very pleasant place to have supper and a great place to volunteer!  We even served donated New York strip steaks at two recent meals, and they were very well received!  And a special thanks to David Anstine for joining the Community Lunch Board of Directors.  He is a great addition to our board.

This month we have two groups visiting from North Dakota and another group from Michigan! We also just began a collaboration with the University of  Washington, and they  join other volunteers from Seattle University, the University of Washington, Seattle Central CC, St. Francis and St Joseph schools.

MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED ON FRIDAYS AT CENTRAL LUTHERAN!  If you have time on Fridays please come help.  We start at 9 and are done by 1:30.  Any part of this time you are available would be greatly appreciated. We have free parking behind the church off East Olive. Everyone is welcome and you need no experience.

Thank you to everyone who supported our 2011 Spring Fundraiser.  It was the most successful ever, thanks in large part to the sponsorship of Swedish Hospital.  We raised over $17,000 through the generosity of so many companies and individuals.  A heads up:  we have already scheduled our Volunteer Recognition Dinner for Sunday, November 6th at 5pm at All Pilgrims Christian Church.
