Lenten Action

For many, Lent is a season to fast or quit something for a while.  Here's an idea for this Lent; let's quit quitting something for Lent.  Instead, let's start something.  Lent is a forty day season from Ash Wednesday to Easter (March 9 - April 24) where we move with Jesus in his life and ministry on the Do Somethingway to Jerusalem, the cross and resurrection.  This is a time when we are to be very much aware of human brokenness and need along with the transformational power of God in our midst.  That being the case, what if we were to simply start a personal practice that intentionally displayed grace and love to others in their need.  Consider a simple and meaningful practice, then choose one for daily practice in Lent.  Here are some examples:

  • commit to speaking encouraging and affirming word of a different person each day,
  • to spend time listening to someone different each day,
  • to volunteer at Community Supper or another ministry to hungry and/or homeless folks,
  • pray for those in our midst who are seen as most vulnerable and hurting,
  • write notes of kind words,
  • smile more
  • show gratitude for those in your life

Your additions to the list may be the best, so begin by prayerfully considering what those might be.  Then, forty days of these actions plus whatever else may come to be part of your discipline.  One more thing, keep your practice between you and God.  Guerrilla love and grace!

Vaya Bien,

Greg

Interfaith Events

The Interfaith Action Inquiry recommends the following two events at Seattle University in March. If enough people express an interest, we'll arrange carpooling.

Reimagining "Religion":

An Interfaith Conversation

On Thursday, March 3, the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Seattle University will sponsor a Christian-Muslim-Jewish discussion on the topic of what do we actually mean by "religion"?  The discussion will focus on theJewish Christian Muslim relationship of religion to the three faiths' sacred texts and ask whether we should see religion as an individual worldview, a social institution, a communal identity, a set of practices, or something else.

Time: Thursday, March 3, 7:00 to 8:30 pm

Location: Wyckoff Auditorium (Bannan Building), Seattle University

Interfaith Advocacy Day

If not now, when?

March 17, 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The United Churches of Olympia
110 Eleventh Avenue SE, Olympia

Huge deficits threaten devastating cuts to social services.  We all know people whose lives will be painfully harder if these cuts go through-they are neighbors, friends, sit next to us in worship and Capitol Buildingshare community suppers with us.  Should the cuts go through?  Should tax loopholes be closed? Should taxes be raised?  Now is the time to make your voice heard in Olympia!

Seattle based and statewide faith organizations invite and urge you to participate in Interfaith Advocacy Day on Thursday, March 17th in Olympia.  This year's theme is "Faithful Action for the Common Good."  Participate in an interfaith gathering, learn about advocacy and current legislation and have an opportunity to advocate by speaking directly to your senator and representatives.  All faith communities are encouraged to participate.

Registration is $20 before March 10, then $25 up until the event. Registration includes an Information Packet, Continental Breakfast, Lunch, and Legislative Appointments. To register and for more information, visit www.thewac.org/ifad2011 or email wac@thewac.org.

Sharing Brings Joy

...and with One Great Hour of Sharing we join in sharing with Christians across town and around the world.  Our dimes and dollars combine with theirs, and then are faithfully distributed to those in need due to natural disaster, and as development support.  From Haiti to New Zealand, and close to home with the recent devastating fire in White Swan, WA, our giving becomes a loving helping hand, supported by our prayers, when sudden need envelops whole communities.

All Pilgrims will receive this special offering on March 20, and distribute the funds evenly through the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ.

Men's Group Update

In February, the men continued on the path of changing bad thoughts into good ones; to think more like Jesus and Men's Groupask how would God would handle the situation. Learning to be peace, learning to be truth, learning to let go and have faith when things in life pop up.

As we approach Easter the group will look at the
traditional purpose of Lent.  For forty days we will look at what it means to fast and pray and reflect.

If you would like to join, please email Michael Small, and he will give you the book for our Lenten study.

We meet at 6:30 am, Monday mornings.  Please enter via the steps on the corner of 10th and Republican.  If you have any questions, please call Michael @ 206-909-2590.

Reflections on the Journey...

Rev. Sandy Messick

Taking Notice...

I've been working with a new Spiritual Director and she is challenging me to deepen my awareness of where Spirit is connected in my life and in my ministry.  She invited me to play the "Game of Minutes" and I invite you to play as well.  Each time throughout your day as you look at your watch or notice the time on a clock, stop for just a moment and invite God into thatJourney space.  Take that moment to become aware of how God is at work and present in that moment, in what you are doing and who you are with and the work with which you are engaged.  Take that moment to invite Spirit to work in you and through you in that moment and to interact with those around you.  I'm finding that as I do that I am ever more grateful for the ways Spirit is moving in my life and in the world.  I find myself ever more grateful for the people with whom I am privileged to interact in ministry and in life.  I find myself more aware of the connections and interconnections in our world from the barista who brews my latte, to the rain and sun that nourished those coffee beans, to the fertile ground in which it grew and the growers who harvested it.

Today I am especially grateful for the ways in which we are in ministry together.
