Community Supper Update

Community Supper as a ministry of compassion has been fruitful and continues to expand.  We have completed a total of four meals as of our most recent December 16th spaghetti dinner.  We served food to 49 guests plus many of the 28 volunteers in an atmosphere of joy, encouragement and happiness that warmed and fed the souls of many hungry people.  A dear friend from Community Lunch on Capitol Hill, Bill, who worships at Prospect Congregational UCC came by and helped us out in many ways.  One that was most touching was to go to his home nearby to getShoes some size 10 socks and shoes for a young man with no shoes who inquired about them near closing time.  As the young man waited, he played beautiful music on the piano that added to the enchantment of the evening.

Moving forward, we are embarking on a bi-weekly Community Supper schedule as we continue to upgrade our kitchen utensils, stove, serving table and dish washing capability.  Our upcoming January dates are Thursday, January 13th and 27th.  Our hope is to start a weekly schedule in the next couple of months, so we continue to improve our logistical skills: on December 16th we tried using Team Leaders for each of the four volunteer teams: Kitchen, Setting the Table, Serving Volunteers NeededBeyond the Kitchen and Welcoming Teams.  This really streamlined our effectiveness in all aspects of serving the meal.  As we settle into serving suppers on a more frequent basis we are in need of more volunteers so that people can take a break from time to time.  Please contact SU Intern Sharon Nichols at 425-793-6369 or nichols5@seattleu.edu to sign up for training and serving opportunities.

The festive Spirit continues in Michael Small's efforts to host a Valentine's Dinner Dance and Fundraiser for critical kitchen improvements for APCC's Community Supper.  Church members, friends and community neighbors are donating time and supplies to host this elegant three-course, semi-formal dinner, dance and silent auction.  All proceeds will directly support our kitchen improvement efforts and we look to you to help us in this effort!  The evening's festivities will open in the main Chapel with a silent auction of goods and services donated by local businesses and community members.  We are currently seeking the material donations necessary toHeart make our silent auction a success.  Items could include but are not limited to: gift baskets, certificates for services, art, CD's, educational services or anything you feel you can contribute to the event.  In return for your generosity your individual or company name will appear on our event program.  You will also receive one free ticket to the event (a $25 value).  Tickets are ready for sale through Michael Small, at mmario2mario@hotmail.com or 206-909-2490, and in the APCC Church Office.  The Valentine's Dinner & Dance takes place February 11, 2011, from 6-10 pm in Stuart Hall.

The deadline for submission of silent auction goods and services is Tuesday, February 8th by 5 pm, so we may compile our list of contributors in time for printing the evening's program.  You may deliver your donation to the APCC Church Office or an event volunteer will gladly assist in collecting donations from your location.  To contribute, contact Lisa Hurst, 540-818-7191, or lisa_l_hurst@yahoo.com.

Charlotte Ballard

Charlotte Ballard (1905-2010)

Charlotte Ballard, the oldest member of All Pilgrims, passed away on December 14 at the age of 105.  Charlotte was born in Cadot, Wisconsin and grew up in Valdez, Alaska.  She graduated from Pacific University in Oregon in 1928 and moved to Seattle, where she worked in doctors' and dentists' offices.  She married her husband, Leland, a dentisCharlotte Ballardt, in 1931, and worked beside him as a dental assistant.  They raised a son, Leland Jr., and a daughter, Alta.  A third son, Alexander, died in infancy, and Leland Sr. died in 1966.  Besides her two surviving children, Charlotte leaves behind nine grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Pilgrim Church, and then All Pilgrims Church, for nearly 50 years and was very active in the women's fellowship during the 1960s and 1970s.  Sharon Long remembers that Charlotte considered it her special job to keep the brass cross and candelabra polished to a bright shine.

Charlotte was a gentle soul who was always quick with acts of kindness for others.  She loved to read, and she very much enjoyed the music of the organ and choir in church.  Prior to her death, her physical health had been diminishing for some years and her hearing and eyesight gradually weakened, but she was mentally sharp until the end.  She had not been able to attend church in recent years, but she kept an interest in what we were doing.  Those of us who knew her hold a special place for her in our hearts.

Interfaith Notes

IMAN's visit to All Pilgrims

On December 5, about 75 people from All Pilgrims and the IMAN Muslim Center gathered in our Sanctuary for an interfaith prayer service, followed by a shared meal in Stuart Hall.  Before the interfaith prayer service, we were a part of something that, as far as any of us know, had never before taken place in our 104-year-old building, as a group from IMAN said their 5:00 prayers together, facing the direction of Mecca.

One could feel the warmth and good will in the building, especially toward the end of the evening as friendly Muslim Christianconversation around each table turned into a facilitated exercise of sharing thoughts with each other about important matters of our faith.

The evening was organized by the Interfaith Action Inquiry team, in particular Theresa Hohman, Dave Beck, Kathy Dawson, and David Paul. Special thanks to Pastor Greg, who collaborated with Jawad Khaki, director of the IMAN Center on the lovely prayer service, as well as Ryan Dye, Dave Beck and the choir for their contribution; and many thanks also to Michael Small, Opal Liljegren and others who made and served the delicious dinner.

Resources on Islam

During this time when so much false, and often hate-filled misinformation is circulating over the Internet, on radio and television, and in private conversations, it is important that we understand what Islam is really all about.

In the pocket of the Interfaith Action Inquiry's poster on the east wall inside Stuart Hall are some resource materials that will guide you to helpful information about Islam.  Please feel free to take a copy and if the copies run out before the supply can be replenished, e-mail David Paul.
