Visioning

As we prepare for a second Sunday, post-worship visioning conversation, allow me to suggest a few questions as we look ahead.  Our best laid plans are not what we are seeking.  Rather, we are seeking to faith our way forward.  Faith is less about what we know and more about what God knows.  Informed by God as we faith (a verb), we find ourselves applying reason andMiss You intellect.  If we get the cart before the horse by relying, first, on our own intellect and reason, then follow by applying God's name to it, then we've become mistaken.  Our knowledge of this is clear even in our tradition's language - "God is still speaking!"  What are we hearing?  What is God saying in moving and speaking to us in this day?

I once knew a person who was a remarkable artist.  One day, he was wrestling with a painting.  He seemed stuck as he tried to visualize the next steps and how to make them.  His response to this experience, given that he had a self-imposed timeline for completion, was frustration, stress and worry.  He told of this over dinner the night it occurred.  He said that stressed and irritable, he was continually bothered by his two-year-old son who kept wanting him to play.  The artist's answer was "no, not now", and so on until finally, the persistent son got his way; and the father put his work and worry down to play with the child on the floor.  Funny thing, while playing with his two year old, the answer for his painting came to him.  The father said, it was as if God led him to play through his son that he could get out of his head and find the answer.  God may, first, have a heart-to-heart with us, then later we find it projected into our minds where we apply our thinking.

Let us playfully wonder.  While relaxing in the sun, sitting back during the evening, taking a walk among a crowd, alone, or with a few others, let us find ourselves with quiet minds.  In that quiet, as we are aware of that which is beyond our skulls, maybe even taken by our place in this vast creation, may we sense the rhythm of God's heart as it speaks to us, answering questions like:

"What are You doing with and through us at All Pilgrims?"

"Who are we?"

"What do You want for us as we go forward?"

I am aware of God moving  us to paint exterior doors, weed, clean and plant flowers.   I am aware of God moving us to put ministry to homeless on the ground.  I am aware of God stirring us to new forms of ministry to children, spiritual formation paths and opportunities for adults, prayer groups to start, financial processes to be simplified, providing direction and guidance for newcomers seeking spiritual pilgrimage with us, and more.  I am also very much aware that God leads, urges, moves people to enter our doors for the first, second, third time.  Are we responding as God desires to meet people in their spiritual thirst and seeking?  What are You doing with and through us, O God?  Who are we to be as progressively faithful pilgrims, called to active ministry and providing a hospitable place where spiritual formation occurs?

Playfully wonder.  Clear space for "down time" where you may ponder in your heart the movement and rhythm of God's heart at All Pilgrims.  Then, attend this Sunday's post-worship visioning.  Email me if you're not able to be in attendance.  It is God's urging and vision that we seek.

New Officers &
Committee Members Approved

As new members continue to join All Pilgrims, we are seeing new faces in leadership as well.  On June 13, 2010 the congregation voted to approve a slate of officers and committee team members.

Officers:

Moderator:              Kathleen Hosfeld

Moderator Elect:      Michael Brown

Secretary:               J.D. Fugate

Interim Treasurer:    Muriel Sanders

Assistant Treasurer:  Ray Nutter

The congregation also re-approved a motion to suspend certain by-law requirements that affect committee structure.  The motion allows All Pilgrims to constitute committees as needed rather than conforming to a predetermined structure of standing committees. Committee leadership approved by the congregation includes:

Personnel - Alan Weiss and Linda Purdy, team members.  The personnel committee provides support to church staff, performs performance appraisals and helps plan staff salaries in concert with the budget process.

Finance - Steve Clagett, chair.  The Finance committee works with the congregation to formulate the annual budget and to oversee the church's finances.

Growing Our Church - David Paul, interim chair. Growing Our Church as a committee has worn several hats.  In recent years it has overseen promotion and advertising outreach, as well as public programs.  This committee is going to conduct a strategic planning process later in the summer to determine its focus and strategy.

Stewardship - This committee is on hold for the next six months while individual past members pursue ad hoc stewardship projects.  Pastor Greg and the Moderator are monitoring giving in the meantime.

New Beginnings Liaison  - Stephan Gerhardt.  This is a new position taking the place of the New Beginnings committee.  Stephan will be coordinating communication about Action Inquiry teams with the congregation and the Council.  He's the "go to" person if you are thinking about starting an Action Inquiry.

Buildings and Grounds  - Ray Nutter, chair; John Sabol, apprentice chair.  The Buildings and Grounds committee is responsible for maintaining the building and physical assets of the church.

Hospitality - Michael Small.  The Hospitality committee oversees cluster activity and schedules special events for congregational fellowship.

Endowments - Stuart Williams.  The endowments committee provides reports to the Finance committee on how the church's invested assets are performing, and advises the church on how funds might be used.

APCC Youth - Danielle Hulton and Heather Purdy, team leaders.  This is a new team that will be looking to launch Worship and Wonder, renovate the nursery and implement new training for all child care workers and volunteers.

The Congregation also approved Jason Kettler to serve as the Member at Large on the Council's Executive Committee.  The Executive Committee makes decisions on behalf of the Council between regularly scheduled meetings.

The 2009-2010 Council and the 2010-2011 Council will meet in a joint session on July 13 to transition leadership.  As we say goodbye to retiring Council and committee members, we are grateful in particular for the leadership of Rod Purdy, Moderator, whose faith and witness to the transforming power of Christ inspired all of us to love one another and to "seek first" that which we are called to do as people of God in community.

Miss You

Having made great improvements to the Broadway street curb appeal, the First Impressions group recruited a large number of people who took on the even more challenging Republican Street side.  Volunteers who showed up on either or both days (Sun, June 6, and Sat, June 12th) to dig, rake, weed and prune were:

Greg Turk and son Lucas, Michael Brown, Larry Pike, Clark Wills, John Sabol and Paul McDevitt, Leslie Leasure, Stephan Gerhardt, Paul Binneboese, Norm & Kathy Wells.  Three people took on lunch Miss Youpreparations, which was much appreciated.  They were Ray Nutter, Vince Larkin and Jan Creason.  Others who provided valuable help prior and during to the formal work days were Linda Gasparovic, Rudy Ziemba, Berlena Brock, Wayne Daly and our church Caretaker, Greg Lewis.

Special thanks to Pastor Greg for bringing his truck with him.  Shown at the top of the article are  some of theMiss You workers who the truck high with weeds, branches and other debris which he then took to the dump!

APCC Goes White-Water Rafting!

Have you ever been white-water rafting?  Have you wondered what it would feel like to go through the White Water Raftingrapids?  Have you wondered what it would be like to be in a raft full of APCC folks screaming your hearts out? Now's your opportunity.

On September 11th APCC will sponsor a white-water rafting trip down the Tieton River.  The Tieton is a quick-moving river with class III and IV rapids, which keeps the excitement going.  It is the only river in the Cascades that is rafted in September when the weather and river temperatures are warmer.

Before the rafting trip have lunch at the all-you-can-eat BBQ by the River.  A rafting guide, equipment (including wet suits) and lunch are provided for $65 per person.  The Tieton River is located about 2.5 - 3 hours southeast of Seattle.  Carpools will be arranged.  Be at the set-up location prior to 1:00 PM.  If you are interested, please contact John Sabol or Paul McDevitt at (206) 860-1267 or [email protected].
APCC Helps Prevent Summer Hunger

We thank everyone who responded to our June "Prevent Summer Hunger Food Drive", targeting kids who may be facing summertime hunger as well as a summer vacation.  With the loss of a subsidized school lunch, this is a real possibility.  With food barrels at our church's front and back doors, we collected over 100 pounds of food during the month of June.  Over 200 social service agencies participate in this foodMiss You distribution project which is administered through the Seattle King County's Emergency Feeding Program.

If you did not have a chance to make your contribution during June, you can make a virtual contribution at www.emergencyfeeding.org.

Outdoor Chapel Memorial Garden
Miss You

Thank you to all who contributed to the All Pilgrims Christian Memorial Garden, created from First Christian Church bricks carried and formed by our youth seven years ago.  The plants were donated over the Memorial Day weekend.  A special thanks to volunteer Leslie Shepherd, who will be maintaining the plants as needed, once a week during the summer months.
