Greetings!

Welcome to the April edition of "News from Around the BOARDWALK". Spring is definitely here, although it's been quite a wet one. Hopefully we won't need any "April showers to bring May flowers" ! Mother Nature has given us a healthy start to the growing season.
 Have a wonderful Spring!

Current Project

We've just started this complex, but very economical kitchen remodel. The new design combines the existing Kitchen and Sunroom. This "futuristic" rendering is the result of many painstaking hours by our world-class designer, Galen, to come up with a revolutionary plan. Check back in the coming months to see how the finished product compares to our expectations! Click HEREto view our website portfolio.
Top 10 Home Maintenance Projects for Spring

Spring is the perfect time to perform a complete inspection of your home, top to bottom, and take care of any necessary repairs.

1. Inspect your roof and chimney.

2. Clean out those gutters!

3. Prevent leaks by inspecting the joints in your foundation, siding, windows and doors.

4. Remove storm windows, wash and install screens (as necessary) and wash the outside of the windows.

5. Remove mold and mildew from the deck and siding. This greatly increases the life expectancy of your deck and siding, saving you thousands in repair costs!

6. Clean up the yard.

7. Repair cracked pavement.

8. Turn on the water to the water spigots, which may have been isolated to prevent freezing over the winter.

9. Check heating and cooling systems.

10. Do a safety check of your electrical system. Check to make sure bulbs do not exceed wattage for the lamp, inspect your circuit breakers for any abnormalities, check your fire extinguisher (just in case!) and check your smoke and CO detectors.

And finally, consider starting a Home Maintenance Fund to help tackle those unexpected Spring time repair costs.

Induction Cooktops

Induction pic
Induction cooktops are getting a lot of play in both advertisements and reviews. This technology is actually not new, but it's recently been seeing a revival.
Some of the basic advantages of induction cooking are:
  - The higher temperature and efficiency of the powerful burners on various induction units allow for much faster boiling for large pots of water.
  - Induction cooktops provide a very efficient transfer of energy from the cooktop to the pan.
  - Induction cooktops are easier to clean because the cooking surface does not get hot - nothing burns onto the cooking surfaces.

How Induction Cooking Works:
1. The element's electronics power a coil (the red lines) that produces a high-frequency electromagnetic field (represented by the orange lines).
2. That field penetrates the metal of the ferrous (magnetic-material) cooking vessel and sets up a circulating electric current, which generates heat.
3. The heat generated in the cooking vessel is transferred to the vessel's contents.
4.  Nothing outside the vessel is affected by the field--as soon as the pan is removed from the element, or the element turned off, heat generation stops.
There is one major point about induction: with current technology, induction cookers require that all your countertop cooking pots and pans be of a "ferrous" metal (one, such as iron, that will readily sustain a magnetic field). Materials like aluminum, copper, and pyrex are not usable on an induction cooker. You don't need top of the line products for induction cooking to work properly. Many very reasonably priced cookware lines work just as well. But if you're considering induction and have a lot invested, literally or emotionally, in non-ferrous cookware, you do need to know the facts.
On the horizon is newer technology that will apparently work with any metal cooking vessel, including copper and aluminum, but that technology--though already being used in a few units of Japanese manufacturing, is probably quite a few years away from maturity and from inclusion in most induction cookers.

Letter from the President

EDWhat do the year 1978 and the New Lead Law have in Common?

Quietly, congress has passed and enacted new legislation surrounding the removal and containment of "Lead" (commonly found in paint, but certainly not limited to this example) on the interior and exterior or in all homes built before 1978.

The new legislation is due to take effect on April 22, 2010, and will govern how your next home remodeling project must be managed if it was built before 1978. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been charged with the task of overseeing and managing the implementation of the new legislation. Admittedly, the EPA say's is does not yet have the funding necessary to police the industry, per say, but by law has to investigate each and every reported violation.

As a homeowner if you decide to remodel your home (including any exterior work or window replacement, for example) and you plan to hire a Remodelor, or contractor, or do-it yourselfer, said company (also known as "Firm" in EPA language) must by law be registered with the EPA, in Washington (by April 22nd, 2010), and must be certified (trained in accordance with EPA lead removal best practices and standards as set forth in the legislation), no exceptions.

To be sure this new law will and already is having a daunting affect on those of us in the Remodeling industry including some sub contractor you might not think of as having to comply for example; siding and window company's, electricians, and plumbers, tile and/or flooring installers to mention a few. The law is so stringent for both the homeowner and Tradesman that neither party will or can escape the requirements relating to "lead" containment and/or its proper removal and disposal methods.

We highly recommend if you live in or own a property built before 1978, to be sure the contractor, person, or persons about to work on your home are compliant. The fines are staggering i.e. $37,500.00 per incident, per day.

Our company is registered with the EPA, and has certified lead removal personnel on staff.

We are currently working on updating our website; however feel free to call us for more information and to receive a free copy of the booklet re: the new law.
