"It takes courage and fortitude, and often sudden suffering, to accept that we are ordinary.
And then it takes humility and openness to discover the wonder waiting there."
Mark Nepo, The Exquisite Risk
Being ordinary is wonderful. We are all ordinary. We are all divine.
I admit that I love to feel "special". I do. I have learned that that doesn't mean I am different or better, I just want to FEEL good. I want my needs met, I want respect, and I want a great life.
I have learned to HONOR myself. To meet my own needs, to respect myself, and to live a great life in how I define great. The result: I feel good.
It's that simple. It's that ordinary.
When I get emails from you saying things like "I wish I had your life" what you are saying is that you want to FEEL GOOD. You want your life, you just want to feel better in it.
My ego enjoys such emails because of that love of feeling special. I then I take a pause and return to humility.
By becoming open to all that is me, in all my ordinary splendor, I have discovered wonder and magic in life. And I share it with you.
I am no different from you. I am not special. I simply made a choice to embrace my ordinary-ness and to discover all the wonder waiting there.
Are you ready to accept that you are ordinary? Are you ready to accept that ordinary is magical and limitless?
We all have flesh, bones, and slimy organs. We all have fears and disappointments. We all have ideas, hopes, and dreams.
When you look at someone who is "successful" in whatever way you define that, you do not need to envy them or to admire them. They are ordinary, just like you. They took the step to discover the wonder waiting there.
Are you ready to take that step?
A little courage, fortitude, humility, and openness go a long way. In fact, they go all the way. I don't believe sudden suffering is required, but it is often the case that a life transition wakes us up.
If I am going to die someday, and I am, then it is time I accept that I am ordinary, and that is amazing and wonderful and something to revel in. If I can create a life that feels this good, and I am just plain old ordinary me, you can create a life of your dreams too. It doesn't take "special" powers. We ALL have special power.
Ordinary is pretty special after all.
Words to Ponder:
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma- which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." Steve Jobs
