Greetings!

"Don't ever pray for patience!"

That's what the "church girls" told a gal way back in college. I still remember her confused face as they mocked and laughed, "Boy, are you going to get tested now!" Maybe they were right, but I didn't like the less-than-loving spirit they exuded when Lisa was looking for support and encouragement.

We all need occasional support and encouragement when it comes to patience. In general, I'm pretty easy-going, but there are moments.

I could brag about how patient I've been with the power outage (back on) and internet outage (still out), but then I'd also have to confess how I was ready to scream when a recent doctor appt kept me waiting (and waiting and waiting) and consumed over 3 hours of my day. I changed the calendar page in the exam room because it felt like I had been sitting there a month.

All "this happiness stuff" I teach has worked wonders in my increased patience with others and for most situations. My areas for improvement: being patient with myself, and with waiting.

I'm getting better at cutting myself some slack. I also am looking at waiting with new eyes, as an opportunity. Sitting in traffic is time to sing, to make a call, listen to an audio book. Waiting at appointments is time to read, study, write. Sometimes we go, go,go so much that having to waiting screws up the next thing that we are go,go,going to.
Maybe it's a sign that we are overbooked.

It seems to me that many older people have more patience because they have figured out that all our rushing and busy-ness is pointless. Downtime, including waiting, is time for our souls to get our attention.

I now always make sure I have a book with me. I also take the time to just listen. Listen to the sounds all around me and in me to quiet me, still me, slow me down. I listen to what my soul is wanting me to learn.

I don't exactly pray for patience, but I do know when I am forced to wait, I will practice new habits and play "catch up" on my inner work. There's always something I can learn.

"I am a proud owner of my first copyrights for lyrics.  I'm working with a very talented musician who was looking for someone to "put words to his music."  As you know, lyrics are a whole planet away from journals and poems, but it has been quite the enjoyable odyssey to get there!

The current project has been a book of contemporary Christian songs for transitional times.
We've done several genres so far.  Rap was fun because I got to use $25 words that rhymed in a church setting.  (Transubstantiation.) I could go on, but you probably get the idea.

Many of your columns and ideas were inspiring along the way, so thank you!"

assay \a-SEY\, verb:

1. To examine or analyze.
2. In metallurgy, to analyze (an ore, alloy, etc.) in order to determine the quantity of gold, silver, or other metal in it.
3. To attempt; try.

I say, (in my best Foghorn Leghorn impersonation, I say....) that to assay something as to examine it is a totally different thing than assay as to try. Can I assay to assay? I say that is confusing.
