Greetings!
| If you are feeling low, I suggest borrowing a toddler for an hour or two.
Little children have a unique energy and zest for life. They delight in the feel of a lady bug, caterpillar, or lightning bug. They delight in each different flower they see as they point and say what color it is. They delight in everything because it is all new and wondrous.
We tend to lose that as we age. Why? Why do we stop marveling at the different shapes of clouds in the sky or how it feels to put your hand in the sprinkler and get squirted or that Jello is fun to eat?
Simply listening to a song brings a child a smile. Simply sitting in the grass is a pleasure. Simply following along in a story book creates a sense of satisfaction and contentment.
Another lesson we can learn from toddlers is to express our emotions and then get over it. A two-year-old falls down, cries for a minute, and then is off gleefully to the next adventure. You never hear a toddler gripe about "Boy, I really took a tumble yesterday." They live in the present moment.
The self-help gurus use the phrase "present moment awareness" and talk about being in the here and now. The best way to learn is from a child. Right here, right now is full of cool things to discover.
If you cannot borrow a kid, just take a pause and act like one. I don't suggest calling your boss a poopyhead or throwing a tantrum. I do suggest slowing down and seeing your life through the eyes of someone who finds delight in simple things.
Pretend this is your first ice cream cone ever. Pretend that this is the first time you have felt sand between your toes. Pretend that the world is a great big place full of new discoveries every day. It is.
Words to Ponder:
"If I had influence with the good fairy, I would ask that her gift to each child be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life." Rachel Carson, marine biologist and conservationist

"I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which came to me as a seed goes to the next as a blossom and that which came to me as a blossom, goes on as fruit."

"I want to tell you I use the philosophy of the happiness club when I am subbing in the local schools and it really helps a lot. I ask the children -how many of you think you can go a whole day without saying or doing anything negative? I remind them to be nice to all their classmates (not leaving anyone out in group time) and to compliment their friends at recess. When I have a 2 day (or more) assignment, I ask them to be very positive with their families. Many say that would be impossible, but I get them to improve themselves. The next day they come back all excited and tell me about all the people they have complimented and how positive they have been. I point out students that have no friends on the playground and some of them make new friends with them and they are all smiles (including both parties). Thanks Kelly for all you do! I hope you never stop. (You have helped me be a more positive person too! I find myself re-reading my emails and taking out anything that is negative.)"Jan H.
