"Socrates learned to dance when he was seventy because he felt that an essential part of himself had been neglected."
~Source Unknown

The "philosophy" of the Joy Dance Party (Oct 1)is multi-dimensional. Some people do neglect an essential part of themselves. I've heard from so many folks who love to dance, but don't get the opportunity anymore. This is your chance.

Research also declares that dancing is good physical exercise and good for the brain, claimed to help ward off Alzheimers. I assert dancing is also good for the soul. One evening of fun to feed mind, body and spirit is remarkable.

It's also what I want for my birthday this year: to dance with all of you. If you don't want to dance, come on out and be a spectator. Maybe you'll win a door prize.

The other gift: Proceeds will go to Rosie's Birthday Club, a local nonprofit who delivers birthday gifts to kids who otherwise would not get anything.

This dance party is a simple affair. A room. A DJ. Shake your booty if you're happy; shake it if you're not. Consider it an experiment. Does dancing really chase the blues away? I say yes, but I want you to know it for yourself. (Try dancing in your kitchen too. Works for me.)

The deeper picture of JOY will be the heart and soul of the retreat day at Anderson Gardens (Oct 9). When we neglect our soul, we deprive ourselves of joy. I'm talking about more than dancing now. I'm talking about the very essence of what makes you tick.

We will spend a day delving into our innermost self, peeling away the layers that prevent us from experiencing true joy. It's a profound awakening when you realize that nobody has the key to your happiness except you.

Give yourself the gift of one day to focus on you. I've learned that life is a journey, and JOY is the "Journey of You." I was once caught in the web of what we think "normal" is, going to a job I hated (and everyone hates the IRS agent), going through the motions of life, doing what I thought I "should" do, trying to please the world, and ignoring my inner voice.

If a former IRS agent can become a "joy fairy," your life can be transformed too. The setting of Anderson Gardens offers peace, inspiration, and renewal. If you are willing to retreat into your soul, you will begin to face life with a re-energized soul and a new sense of joy.

I believe the gist of joy is tapping into your inner essence, learning to trust youself. I also know that many people are hesitant. If you attend this one-day retreat and do not feel you got a good return on your investment, your fee will be refunded, no questions asked.

When I moved back from France (it's been four years now), I was awakened. I came alive, and now it is my mission to help others wake up to the joy in life. I wish I could take you all to the south of France for a year. For now, how about one day to a beautiful spot right here in the US?

Come dance with me. Come learn and grow with me. Come find the joy with me.

There is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good."

Picks this week

Books -   365 Days ofJoy- How to be Happy Every Single Day by Kelly Epperson

Mas Tequila Review - Richard Vargas, editor (poetry anthology)

Music - Leave Your Sleep ~Natalie Merchant (music and poetry)

[Don Baird, professor of psychology in Chicago, who (whom?) I met in Disneyland, has been a wealth of encouragement and is an avid proponent of happy snail mail, and is consistently turning me on to new joys, like this Natalie Merchant CD. Who knew a professor of psychology could so whimsically fantastically wisely generously delightfully share so much joy?! Eternal gratitude! Every card and email he sends is quotable.
"Great music always soothes and offers wonders."

Buy the CD so you get the booklet too. From Natalie's notes: Five years of research and writing went into this project. She collaborated with over 100 musicians from all over the world. She pulled "obscure and eccentric poems" and "used music to enter them." Her joy and delight is teaching her young daughter that "speech could be the most delightful toy in her possession."  Natalie researched the lives of the poets and a summary of each is included as well.

A lot in a little package.

"The mere fact of a poem appearing simple in language and construction bears no relation whatsoever to the profundity of ideas it may contain." ~poet Charles Causley

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT ME:
In addition to three joy droppings, you need to think of three things you like about YOU. Liking yourself and loving yourself leads to true internal happiness. Happiness has to come from within.

Let's see.... what I like about me...

* I write poetry.

* I'm pretty good at remembering names.

* I was the top collegiate female mud wrestler in 1986. (Or perhaps I'm a story teller.)

When you come to the edge of all the light you have, and must take a step into the darkness of the unknown, believe that one of two things will happen. Either there will be something solid for you to stand on or you will be taught how to fly.
