A la rentree!

I don't know how to get the accent symbol over the first A and next to last E, so forgive my butchering of the French phrase.

In la France, the month of August is holiday. September heralds back to school, back to work, back to "reality." When August begins, the wish is Bonnes Vacances = happy vacation. When September rolls around, the well wish is a la rentree = happy back to normalcy.

Here in the states, we head back to school Monday. My guys are now senior and junior. I have loved every stage. I cherish the memories, but really do not want to go back to the days of "this week wear the color red and bring a snack in the shape of a circle."

We had tons of fun when they were little, and we still do. I didn't think it would get here so soon, but it's time to prepare them (and me ) to leave the nest.

Besides basic survival skills of food, hygiene, manners, etc, I think my sons know they can be confidant in their own judgment, know they can always turn to me and their dad, and know that kindness matters. They know that in career choice, they need to enjoy what they do, not just make a buck. They know that attitude trumps just about everything. They know scrambled eggs make a great meal any time of day.

If you do not like the "normalcy" that you are returning to in your life, start focusing on what you want to be different. Where do you want to spend more time? What do you need to let go? What do you want to learn this new school year? School is always in session. Life lessons never cease.

Go buy a new notebook and nice pen. Jot down what has evolved in your life the past year, and what you want to see happen this year. Pay attention to what makes you tick, and what ticks you off.

Your "normalcy" does not have to be normal. Trust your own judgment. Focus on attitude. And make some eggs. (Unless you are vegan. Make fake eggs.)

Happy re-entry -- into the world you are creating for yourself.

Words to Ponder:

Don't be pushed by your problems; be led by your dreams.

Have you ever seen...

the fine art of communication?
This ain't it!

Snapped this anonymous couple on a date in Chicago. (Summer Dance in Grant Park) Forget young love, I'll take middle-aged romance!

Picks this week

Book Pick -     the "required reading" you were supposed to do this summer (applies only to my sons)

Your JOY assignment this week:

Plan your dream vacation.
Plan your dream reality.
Make it happen.
What brings me JOY lately?

* Fresh tomatoes

* Lunching with chicks

* Stealing silly moments with my sons

* Mapquesting a route to Niagara Falls

* Letting go

* Learning what fennel is

* My three-hole punch

* New cushy socks

* Happy mail

* Sweet middle-aged romance

* Chicago

 WHAT I LIKE ABOUT ME:
For those new to the JOY letter, every night you are to jot down three things in your joy journal that made you smile/brought you peace/made you laugh/made you glow with appreciation/went your way.
ALSO you need to think of three things you like about yourself. Liking yourself and loving yourself leads to true internal happiness. Happiness has to come from within.

Let's see.... what I like about me...

* I like telling people the story of me writing a nasty gangsta rap song.

* I like that I raised two boys who will show their mama affection in private and public.

* I like that I give JOY presentations.

joke of the day

 A linguistics professor was lecturing his class one day.

'In English', he said, 'A double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative.'

A loud voice from the back of the room piped up, 'Yeah, right.'

Lago Maggiore, Italy   May 4-12, 2011

Enchanted. Magical. Fulfilling. Dreams-come-true. Once in a lifetime opportunity.

Deb McKew of Words in Play has done several retreats abroad. It is an honor for me to be invited to be a presenter with wordsmith extraordinaire Deb and worldclass poet Dianalee Velie. I get to espouse on finding joy (not too hard in Italy) and get romantic delving into the Lost Art of Love Letters.

It does not matter if you are interested in writing, poetry, (or joy), this trip will provide a week in Italy unlike what any other tour could provide. (You do not have to participate in any workshop or creative activities. But you will love them!)

The custom itinerary, accomodations, and day trips were developed by Deb and Holly from Compass Travel whose husbands hails from Lago Maggiore. When we say we will be treated like family, it is not sales jargon. It's the simple truth. Holly and her hubby are coming with us. We have connections, baby!

 Brochure  to download.
 Contact me and I can mail you a brochure.
 Register before December 31 and save $200.

If you are a single traveler and want a roommate, let me know. We'll arrange accomodations.

Word Nerd

 oneiric \oh-NY-rik\, adjective:

Of, pertaining to, or suggestive of dreams; dreamy.

Oneiric comes from Greek oneiros, "dream."

I googled for synonyms. Result:
"No results found for oneiric:
Did you mean generic?"

Um, no. I do believe generic is the opposite of oneiric.
My date last night, Ewan McGregor, was so dreamy.
My date last night, Bud Smith, was so generic.
Maybe Greek guys are generically dreamy. "You've seen one handsome, suave, Greek god, you've seen them all."

Beauty's where you find it...

in the voices of children, singing and swaying and hands a'movin'
in the cool guitar guy teacher playing with them (check out his guitar strap)
in the pure JOY of expressing ourselves freely

 PS22 Chorus "That was when I ruled the world"

(Thank you, Allen Penticoff, for knowing I would dig this.)

Re-entering the real world. Creating it how I want it to be.
