FIND YOUR JOY!                                                                      NOVEMBER 6, 2009
"I've got a peaceful easy feeling..."

Thanks to a reader who has become an e-friend, I'll be at the Don Henley concert Monday night in Chicago. How cool is that. Writing my weekly newspaper column and now this Friday letter brings me more joy than I ever could have imagined. When we put ourselves out there, it is amazing what we can get in return. These may be my lowest paying gigs, but the most rewarding. "I do it for the love," I always say. The surprise gifts of gum, Harley rides, and music are the incredible icing on my big fat joyful cake.

Thank you.

Smithereens  (noun)

Pronunciation:  [smi-dhr-'eenz]

Definition: A multitude of bits and pieces.

Usage: Today's word is used almost exclusively in the idiomatic phrase "to smithereens" as in to smash to smithereens. It seems to be a plural noun, since the singular is all but never used. However, D. H. Lawrence proved it still performs creatively when he wrote, "The sun went bang, with smithereens of birds bursting in all directions," in 'Mornings in Mexico.'
