Find Your JOY!                                October 23, 2009
Once upon a time, there were two little boys...
who lived in a gray house with white shutters. I used to make up stories for my sons at bedtime. Some nights, I simply recounted what we had done that day.  Some nights, we would let our imagination go. Now those boys are six feet tall and can fall asleep without Mom sitting with them.

We can't go back to those days, and I don't want to. I cherish the memories, but I delight in the here and now. I believe the future holds wonderful things for all of us. And I believe that all we have for sure is today. And today is a good day.

Say that every morning: Today is a good day.

Last week's preference poll:

Young Elvis or White Jumpsuit Elvis?

No suprise, Young Elvis was hands-down winner. Loved all your remarks. Thanks for playing along!

One diplomatic reader wrote: "The early Elvis in his innocence was pure joy to watch dance. However, I believe his music grew more beautiful with time even though fame and drugs jaded and destroyed him eventually. So Elvis is good both young and old. "  ~Cindy Guentherman

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence.

Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

When all the nails were gone, the father said, "You have done well, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one.  A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one."

Anger helps no one. Encouragement helps everyone. Be a fence mender.
