 Notes from the President/CEO Teresa

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."            - Martin Luther King

I have heard the above quote many times but as the new CEO of the YMCA of Volusia Flagler County I am living the saying!  The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of activities; meeting new people, seeing new places and learning new things.  As I took time this past weekend to rest and reflect on the beginning of my new journey, I was reminded of the YMCA logo and how it is the center of what I am blessed to do for a living. This logo is symbolic of what we are all working to accomplish as a new YMCA association.  Please join me in this reflection and continue to pray for our organization as we all work to become ONE and serve our greater communities.

Newsletter logoThe circles signify the eternal union of all YMCA members bound together in Christian fellowship. The first circle represents the oneness of humankind. The second circle represents friendship and love without end among indivduals.
The Chi Rho is an early Christian monogram of the first two letters of the Greek word for Jesus Christ.

The red triangle stands for the fullness of life through equal development of spirit, mind and body.

The Bible is open to John 17:21 where the words "that they all may be one" are found. These words represent the ideal of YMCAs all around the world-that people of every race, every nation, and every faith can experience brotherhood through the teachings of Jesus.

What a great organization we serve and what an honor and awesome responsibility God has placed on each of us within this organization. Whether you are a member, a donor, or a staff person we all have the same goal and mission.  Let's remember that as we move forward to make the YMCA of Volusia Flagler County the best YMCA in the country!

Thank you for allowing me to be here and serve you and this community!

Teresa Rogers

Mission Moment
LifeguardFollowing her one week internship at the Port Orange YMCA and two week Jr. Life guarding class Alexander, better known as Ali, went on a vacation with her parents to her Grandparents apartment complex in New Jersey to spend an afternoon by the pool.

The lifeguard on duty that day was not paying attention to the pool and had his back turned to the pool talking with a friend.  Ali, on the steps in the shallow end noticed a 7 year old  child bobbing up and down in the water trying to get air.  The child struggling to stay afloat went under.  Acting quickly Ali was able to get the child to safety.

What is amazing is that Ali, who just turned twelve while on vacation, noticed what the lifeguard was and was not doing while performing his duties. Also, she performed an extension assist exactly how she was taught and saved a child's life within days of taking the Jr. Lifeguard training course at the Port Orange YMCA.

Every summer kids just like Ali attend the YMCA summer camp and go home and back to school with all kinds of stories and adventures. Thanks to you as a community member and a supporter of the YMCA, young people get an opportunity to learn life skills, build self-esteem, and in rare occasions, like Ali's, save a life.

Thanks for supporting your local YMCA where we build strong kids, strong families, strong
communities.
