From our Intern's Perspective...  by Casey Mayo

Three months ago I was given an opportunity to intern for the Homestead at Alder Cove. On June 12, 2009 I graduated from the University of Washington, and as a graduation requirement I needed to complete a full 5 credit internship from an approved organization. I knew I needed to do something I had a genuine interest in and would like to devote myself to for an entire quarter. I learned of the Homestead and what it would mean for foster children through the Braaten family and immediately knew this was where I was supposed to be.

During my internship I used the UW library resources to locate foundations and companies that contribute to causes such as the Homestead. We have submitted several grant applications and anticipate hearing back over the next few months.  There are other initiatives we have started to raise funds too. The creation of our '25 for 12' campaign encourages everyone to donate to the cause. By donating just $25 once a month we can raise the money needed to present the permits to Pierce County and break ground. So far there has been $2,500 raised just through the 25 for 12 campaign.

With social networking on the rise, there was no doubt that the Homestead needed to make its mark on the web. I was able to help create a Cause application on Facebook, the online social network site. The Cause is a media tool where the Homestead can keep friends and supporters updated on the latest happenings. Facebook members can join the cause and also make an online PayPal donation that goes directly to the Homestead organization. Within the next few weeks we hope to add a 360° view of the property to the website and a short video of an interview with Sue Braaten speaking about the Homestead.

I can not express what an unbelievable opportunity I was given interning at the Homestead. I not only learned about grant writing and fundraising, but also the dream and vision of what the Homestead is to be for foster children. What an incredible experience to work side by side with the Board of Directors, and contribute to an amazing organization. I anticipate volunteering my time to the Homestead and watching it grow and develop over the next few years.  I encourage each of you to also get involved and do what you can to help us reach our goal of breaking ground in January 2010 by:

Along with other members of the Board of Directors, Parker participated in the festivities celebrating Gig Harbor's Uptown shopping center's one-year anniversary.  The Homestead had a booth and was able to pass out information and answer questions about the project.

Part of the day's events was a fashion show and costume contest which Parker took 1st place for his golfer outfit!  Along with great exposure for the Homestead we were able to sell over 20 faux Parker dogs that day!  Keep up the good work Parker!

We continue to make updates as information becomes available on our website at www.homesteadcove.org.
