What About Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance can help you to provide the best medical care possible for your dog or cat.

Read this article on VNN, "Putting Pet Insurance to the Test" for guidance in choosing among several pet insurance providers.

Here are links to several pet insurance providers you may want to consider if you're thinking about getting coverage:

Hold it Please!

Is your dog coming in

for a problem that might require a urine sample?

If so it's important not to let him or her urinate before entering the hospital.

And, if your dog or cat is coming in with diarrhea, we ask that you try to bring a stool sample - about the size of a ping pong ball -  with you in a clean, closed container.

Have you considered Acupuncture?

Acupuncture can relieve the symptoms and lessen the discomfort of many canine health problems.

October - Take Time to Prepare for a Disaster. . .

...This month is the anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake so it's a good time to remind ourselves of the importance of being prepared - not only for earthquakes but for any type of disaster. Pets are a critical part of the preparation. Should we need to either shelter in place or evacuate our home and stay in a shelter we will l5 Easy Steps ikely want to include our pets in the planning. With that in mind we offer some resources to help you.

The first resource is our "5 Easy Steps" hand out that I developed a few years ago as a result of my interest in learning about and teaching disaster preparedness for pets and their owners.  Click on the image at left to download the flyer.
Of course we can't help our pets if we are not prepared so here are several resources to help you get ready for whatever disaster may await us.

You should also know about S.C.O.P.E. or Sonoma Citizens Organized to Prepare for Emergencies. This is a group of citizens who have been meeting and organizing for the past two years to make sure that Sonoma Valley is prepared for a disaster. They have produced a useful Citizen's Handbook for disaster preparedness that can be downloaded for free. Just Click Here to download the handbook in pdf form.

Walk with the Dogs . . .

. . . The Sonoma Valley Dog Owners and Guardians (SVDOG) will hold its third annual Walk With the Dogs on Sunday, Oct. 2, starting at SebasBaxtertiani Winery and bringing together area dog lovers and their pooches for a good cause.

The walk raises money for UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Comparative Cancer Center and for SVDOG. Cancer is the cause of death for one out of four dogs.

The walk starts at 10 a.m. and last until noon, strolling west along the bike path to the Vallejo Home entrance drive and back. Participants can walk as much or as little of the route as desired. Local dog professionals and businesses will have information booths at the event and there will be a silent auction at Sebastiani.

Dog owners are encouraged to register at www.Cancer Survivorsvdog.org. Registration will also be available the morning of, beginning at 9 a.m. in
the northeast corner of the Sebastiani parking lot. Registration fee is $20 a dog (or per dog-lover joining the walk without a dog) in advance, and $25 on walk day.

For more information and to register, visit www.svdog.org.

Our fresh face . . .

. . . Arroyo just got a facelift. Thanks to the Facade Improvement Program through the Sonoma County Redevelopment Agency we were able to put on a much needed new roof, paint the building exterior, install new front doors and entry gates. Thanks to local contractor, Dan Heddy Construction for doing such great work in such a short time!

We'll come to you . . .

. . . As we announced earlier this summer we are offering house call service within Sonoma Valley.

We feel it is very important to make pet health care more Allie & Babe Johnsonaccessible to those pets that cannot get to us, such as older pets who are not mobile or cats who hate the carrier and/or the car ride; and for those pets whose owners cannot get their pets to the clinic because of lack of a means of transportation, we want to provide the medical care they deserve.

We will also make house calls for those pets that are near the end of life, for pets who need hospice care, or for pets who need help with their gentle passing.

Just call us at 996-1054 to set up a house call appointment.

Hill's y/d diet  to be Available in October . . .

. . . Hill's has just announced a new addition to its prescription diet line of products. Beginning in October the company will begin to distribute y/d Feline Thyroid Health. This product will be available in both dry and canned forms. Y/d™ is formulated to decrease the production of thyroid hormone by reducing dietary iodine.

If this diet does what it says it can, it will be a powerful tool for treating hyperthyroidism. Many pet owners will embrace not having to pill their cat twice daily. Although it doesn't directly address the underlying tumor, it will be a safe and easily implemented alternative. It is also helpful that monitoring therapy is relatively straightforward.

One key for making this diet work will be compliance. It's important for cat owners to understand that this will not control their cat's disease if they use alternative foods. And that it is not a cure, but a way of controlling or managing hyperthyroidism
