Dental Month continues through March! . . .

. . . We're happy to announce that we're extending our Dental Month promotion through March.
Smiling Dog     And why is cleaning your pet's teeth so important you ask? Research shows that around the age of two 70% cats and 80% of dogs have some sign of periodontal disease. Without regular dental care (just like humans!) a buildup of sticky plaque accumulates and hardens to form tartar. If not removed it can lead to gingivitis, a painful condition of inflamed gums, and eventually periodontal disease may develop. Pets may lose teeth and be prone to infections that may affect other organs in the body.
It's surprisingly easy to keep your pet's teeth and gums clean and healthy. The first step is to ask us about a professional prophylaxis to clean the teeth. As we are an AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accredited veterinary hospital we follow AAHA dental care guidelines. This requires that the pet be anesthetized as you can imagine no dog would want to sit still for a thorough teeth cleaning! WE DO NOT RECOMMEND ANESTHESIA FREE CLEANING! Besides that fact that it does not allow for the proper cleaning of the teeth it is ILLEGAL according to the California Business and Professional Code.Pet Dental Logo.no date
Once your dog or cat has clean teeth you can help keep them that way with daily cleanings and by feeding him normal dry pet food. This provides a dental benefit because when he crunches on the kibbles, the moderate scraping action cleans his teeth. If your dog exhibits the more serious symptoms of gingivitis, specially formulated foods are available that do a much better job of cleaning his teeth than normal dry food. Ask us for help in selecting the best dog food for your dog or cat.

Team Profile . . .

. . . Meet our Head Nurse, Xochitl ("Sochi") Fisher, RVT. Xochitl has been with us since 2003. She started as a recetpionist and after a couple of years moved into "the back" where she has worked since as aXochitl veterinary nurse and now as our Head Nurse. She plays a critical role to ensure a smooth workflow during our busy days. She is also in charge of the nursing team and the kennel team as well as working as a nurse in a support role for the doctors. She also does most of the ordering of medical supplies which is a job unto itself.

In addition, she also schedules the nurses and veterinary assistants and helps manage the hospital's inventory which is no small task!

Her education includes a high school degreee from the L.A. Zoo Magnet and a BS in Animal Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She successfully passed her test for her RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician) in 2010.

Xochitl enjoys fostering kittens for Pets Lifeline during the summer. Her husband, Dave, and three cats, Ghengis Khan, Azrael and Timmy look forward to socializing the little furballs each season.

Dine and Donate for Cancer ...

. . . Mary's Pizza Shack has once again offered a Dine and Donate day to support the American Cancer Society as part of the Relay for Life campaign for 2011.

On Tuesday, March 15, Mary's will donate 20% of your dine-in, take-out & delivery purchases to fight cancer. This is good at the Boyes Hot SprMary's logoings and the Sonoma Plaza locations and it's good all day.

If you're not able to participate on the 15th you can still help by making your donation directly, online, by clicking here. You can also join our team, the Arroyo Cancer Avengers, by signing in at the same web site and by pledging to raise $100. We'll give you your own Relay for Life t-shirt and ask that you join in the relay for a 1 hour walk. Relay for Life will be on August 6 at the Sonoma VRFL logoalley High School track.

Our team captain is once again Dr. Josephine McGrane and she is hoping for another great year.  If you would like to help Dr. McGrane with fundraiser ideas or to help her organize her team you can contact her directly at the hospital, 996-1054.  It's fun and the money raised goes to a great cause, The American Cancer Society.

We hope you will become an Arroyo Cancer Avenger this year!

Dog Rules to Live By . . .
Dog with stick

. . . If you live by these dog rules, you will be a happier person! There's a lot we humans can learn from dogs. If you live your life by the same philosophy that dogs do, you will be much better off in life. In the wild, animals fight only for two things, not a fancy car, not clothes or jewelry, they just fight for food or a mate, everything else they get after that is just pure happiness.

Dog Philosophy:

1. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.

2. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be

    pure ecstasy.

3. When loved ones come home, always run and greet them.

4. When it's in your best interest, always practice obedience.

5. Let others know when they've invaded your territory.

6. Take naps and always stretch before rising.

7. Run, romp and play daily.

8. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.

9. Be loyal.

10. Never pretend to be something you're not.

11. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

12. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and

      nuzzle them gently.

13. Delight in the simple joys of a long walk.

14. Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

15. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

16. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

17. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

18. No matter how often you are criticized, don't buy into the guilt

thing and pout. Run right back and make friends.
