Worried about Lepto? . . .
. . . I have become increasingly concerned about Leptospiros here in Sonoma Valley and I strongly recommend getting your dogs vaccinated if they are active outdoors. The following is an excerpt from a great article on this subject from HealthyPet.com, the American Animal Hospital web site:
"Leptospirosis, a disease that damages the liver and kidneys, can affect you and your pets. It has re-emerged in North America, say professionals at the Center for Disease Control, who describe the disease as a notable source of mortality.
As the number of cases climbs, some veterinarians are suggesting Leptospirosis vaccines to protect pets and their families.
|
"You've got to be really careful because Leptospirosis can spread to people as well, so it's urgent to protect pets as well as ourselves."
- Anne Pierce, DVM, of AAHA-accredited North Academy Veterinary in Colorado
|
The disease, which is transmitted through contact with water, food, or soil that contains urine from infected animals, affects many animals (including people) but cats are rarely affected. Symptoms in pets, which can be similar to the flu, should be reported to veterinary professionals as soon as possible. Early treatment can prevent serious health problems.
In addition to exposure from eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated with urine from sick animals, pets can get Leptospirosis by sniffing the ground or rolling in grass where a sick animal has urinated. Pets with scrapes or scratches on their skin are particularly susceptible."

 | AAHA Accreditation Counts. . .
. . . When quality medical care matters, clients take their pets to AAHA-accredited hospitals. There are 3,000 accredited hospitals in North America, and we are one of them. Superior care is clearly a priority for you and your family, so it should be reassuring to know that Arroyo Veterinary Hospital made the grade. We passed a rigorous review that includes more than 800 standards created by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) that evaluate quality care and client service. AAHA accreditation is a trusted sign of excellence. It shows that veterinary professionals are knowledgeable, equipment is well maintained and updated, medical procedures are cutting-edge, and facilities deliver high quality veterinary care. To maintain accredited status, we voluntarily undergo comprehensive on-site evaluations about every three years. It takes an extra effort, but we know that AAHA accreditation keeps us at the front of the veterinary pack. We are dedicated to providing your pet with the best health care possible. Take pride in the knowledge that your pets are in great hands. To learn more about why AAHA accreditation is important click on the logo above. Let the Wild Barkus Begin! . . . . . . The Second Annual Barkus parade in the Springs will take place on Saturday, February 5, from 11am to 1 pm. The Barkus has become a revered tradition in New Orleans as part of Mardis Gras and now you can enjoy Sonoma's version of this "just for fun" event where owners and their dogs come in costume. The festivities will start at Sheana Davis' Epicurean Connection at 18812 Sonoma Hwy, just south of Arroyo Veterinary Hospital where participants will be treated to a warm beverage and epicurean delights. Then people and dogs will make their way up Highway 12 to Arroyo where they will be greeted by a pet fair. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes and parade participants will receive a complimentary gift bag. Last year we had an enthusiastic crowd who braved the inclement weather to enjoy the first ever Barkus in the Springs. This year we expect a larger turnout and even more fun!
