Our Voice

A Letter From the CEO

Dear Friends,

Summer in New England - the freshly picked strawberries, the ice cream cones, the ocean, lakes and mountains - we are very lucky to live is such a beautiful region of the country.  Welcome to our summer newsletter - we are seeing continued strong demand for our services, and are so proud to watch each and every person we are working with gain better control of their finances and get that great car that is so needed for themselves and their families.  We are grateful to share a story about how our services have impacted the Harrison family (article below). It would not be possible for us to help as many people if it weren't for our wonderful partners that we are so fortunate to be working with.  Don't forget that if you have a car that can be donated, or know someone else who can donate a car, that one car will help many gain their financial freedom.

I wish you all a wonderful summer.

Success Story: Sarah and Allan Harrison

Sarah and Allan have been married for over six years now and have an 18 month old daughter.  In 2006 they moved to Tennessee for Sarah's new teaching job and Allan began working there at a Drug and Alcohol Council.  After being in TN for less than a year Allan was diagnosed with stage IV liver disease. In addition, he had to undergo two knee surgeries, a shoulder surgery, and then 48 weeks of Interferon injections for his liver disease. He had countless biopsies, an MRI and many other medical procedures.

"I had to take pills that you couldn't even touch with your hands because of how potent they were.  My liver was so damaged that when they took a biopsy, it disintegrated before they could do any testing on it.  We were told I only had a 25% chance I'd live, so we stopped caring about anything else.  We would take from one account to pay another and wouldn't pay attention to any bills unless they were past due." - Allan

Thankfully after the Interferon injections Allan was cured of liver disease. Sarah and Allan moved back to Exeter, NH and began staying with Sarah's mother.  They had their lives and future to look forward to together, but their finances and credit had taken a huge hit which resulted in a downward spiral from the medical issues they had faced. Sarah and Allan saw a poster for More Than Wheels and called because they needed a reliable car, their 1999 Pontiac Grand AM was on its last leg. They had no idea that they would be getting much more than just a car from More Than Wheels when they made that first call... continue reading

A One Day Fundraising Campaign

On June 14th, generous donors put More Than Wheels in the top third of over 200 nonprofits representing their cities during a nationwide, 24-hour fundraising competition. More Than Wheels was chosen to represent Manchester - the only New Hampshire community to take part - for Twive & Receive, a day of fundraising through social media sponsored by the online fundraising platform Razoo.com. Raising nearly $800, More Than Wheels supporters helped mark Manchester, and all of New Hampshire, as one of the most charitable parts of the country.

The Difference Our Volunteers Make

Phone calls, problem-solving, and letter-sending are all in a day's work for volunteers at More Than Wheels. In the past few months, volunteers have contributed over 100 hours and made a huge difference in the organization. By directing incoming calls and assisting with administrative tasks, our wonderful volunteers have given More Than Wheels staff, especially our hard-working Intake team, added capacity to serve our clients.

Our volunteers have come from different organizations and walks of life. We are grateful to our partner volunteer agencies - Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), Volunteer New Hampshire, and National Able - for referring such great volunteers, ranging from college students to those long-retired. They have done fantastic work and will continue to be a vital part of our organization!

We're on the Radio!

We recently had the privilege of being featured on two radio shows! Our CEO, Terri Steingrebe, was on WZID's Eye on New Hampshire discussing our Credit Repair Program as well as WTPL's Green Scene to talk about how our services help to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a greener tomorrow. Keep an eye on our website's news feed for links to listen to these shows! A big thank you goes out to our partners at PSNH who have helped to make this possible!

Summerize Your Car

Even before you pack those beach towels, your suntan lotion (45 spf for the kids) and your inner tubes, here are some tips on getting your car ready for summer driving.

1.  Check your radiator and radiator hoses - the cooling system works harder in the summer.
2.  Check your air filter - it may be time to replace it.
3.  Check the tread in your tires - especially for rainy driving.
4.  You may need a radiator 'flush'. Coolant is especially important in summer, so your engines don't overheat.
5.  Replace old wiper blades and fill your wiper fluid (to get ready for those BUGS!)
