A Warm Car in Winter is a Comforting Thing

 Greetings!

Having a car you can rely on is important all year, especially during the cold months of winter in New England.  I hope that those of you currently going through our program are making good progress on your steps to success, so that you can take delivery of  your car before the winter snows fly. To help you prepare for those cold, snowy days, this issue of our newsletter has links to helpful information about car maintenance and how to prepare for winter driving.

There have been several wonderful articles written about More Than Wheels in the past few months, two in the New York Times, as well as radio and TV interviews that can link to in this issue.  Please feel free to forward them to friends and co-workers, too!

We are always looking for ways to connect with ever wider audiences, and we want to hear from you--please post your thoughts and comments on our Facebook page.

 Warm regards,

    Terri

Patsy's Story

Patsy is so proud of what she has achieved since she enrolled at More Than Wheels, and cherishes the 2010 Hyundai Accent she took delivery of at the end of July.  The car allows her to get to her new job, and is a daily reminder of her determination to turn her life around.

After her ex left her with the bills and a mortgage it had taken two salaries to pay, she fell behind in her payments and the bank foreclosed on the house.  In addition, her old 4x4 truck had needed too many repairs that she couldn't afford, and it was repossesed. Patsy moved in with a family member and struggled to make ends meet before she made the call to More Than Wheels.  Upon entering the program, Patsy dove into contacting past creditors and began to pay off her debts. She took part in the temporary transportation program at More Than Wheels that provided a Bridge car (to bridge the gap until she was able to get her new car).

"I loved the financial fitness classes and with my new job and new car I really know I have moved forward with my life!"

Great Tips to Get Your Car Ready for Winter

If you start preparing your car now for the harsh winter weather, you will enhance the life of your car, and save yourself from expensive repair bills.

  • The first thing to do is check the owner's manual to see what specific advice applies to your vehicle--especially if a specific lower viscosity oil is recommended for the winter.
  • Next, check the to see that the radiator is topped off with antifreeze, and that you have a good supply of window-washer fluid approved for winter use.
  • Replace your wiper blades if they are worn--you'll need good wipers for the snow, sleet and salt that gets splatterered on your windshield when driving in bad weather.
  • Good tread on your tires is critical for driving safely on slick winter roads. If your tires are worn, they should be replaced, and you might consider buying snow tires if you live in a very snowy area.
  • Check your battery.  Very cold temperatures put a lot of stress on your battery, and it's better to replace a weak battery now and avoid being stranded on the coldest day of winter.  If your battery terminals are dirty, clean them off to assure good contacts.
  • Make sure your window defrosters are working, so that you can defrost the ice and maintain good visibility.
  • And lastly, modify the way you drive--slow down when roads are wet--it could be black ice.  And be sure to clean the snow off your car  completely before getting on the road.

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather and prepare  to have a great winter!
