Getloaded 2011 Year in Review: New Ways to Simplify Trucking

We've been working to simplify and maximize freight matching for our members since 1999 -- but 2011 might go down as the year we introduced more new and exciting developments than ever before. From new websites to new partnerships, the Getloaded member experience is now easier, more efficient and more connected. Because these exciting developments completely focus on making your hard work even more successful, we want to make sure you don't miss any of our powerful updates. So, here's our review of the many ways we simplified trucking in 2011:

New Member Site

Our first major change this year was also likely the one that most affected your freight matching: a revised member site. In early 2011, we introduced our new member site that makes finding loads and trucks easier than ever with a streamlined and intuitive layout, and features like Dual Leg searches and Match My Trucks.

New Public Site

On July 13, we released a new, updated public site incorporating the efficient, easy-to-use design users were already enjoying on our member site. We kept the features you love -- such as live load and truck postings, full membership information and informative blog -- and added new communication tools, including social media links and a user-submitted testimonial page.

Spanish Language Site

We are proud that, in August, we launched the trucking industry's first Spanish language load board. Getloaded.com/espanol offers the full functionality of Getloaded.com, allowing Hispanic transportation professionals to enjoy our powerful search and supportive service in their chosen language.

Exclusive Partnerships

While our tech and marketing teams were busy planning, designing and building the new sites, other members of the Getloaded family focused on forming exclusive partnerships with companies that could benefit our users. From accounting guidance to insurance to financing and beyond, we specifically built alliances with companies whose services and perspectives can help members achieve even greater sustainable trucking success:

  • The Edge by Freightliner
  • Load Training
  • Total Control Insurance Services
  • Fleet Savings
  • eTrucker Tax
  • Freight Check
  • JobsInLogistics
  • Pacific Financial
  • National Association for Minority Truckers

Ongoing Site Enhancements

Our focus on improving your online member experience didn't stop once our new websites went live. We know freight and carriers' availability can change in the blink of an eye, so we continued to update and advance our systems to bring you the critical data you need, faster. Now, search results post in under a second, Suggested Loads refresh every 10 seconds and website performance increased by 40 percent.

As 2011 comes to a close, we look forward to sharing new developments next year. And while you continue trucking freight -- we'll continue working to make your job and life easier. Our 2011 improvements are only the beginning of our continued focus on fostering your trucking success.

Getloaded Gives Back in 2011

Giving back to the community is a way of life at Getloaded. Even while we were working long hours in 2011 to make your freight matching experience as easy and effective as possible, we made time to support the community in many ways, including:

Movember

Each year, men around the world grow mustaches to raise money for prostate cancer and other men's health issues as part of a worldwide charity event called Movember. This year, 11 Getloaded employees gave their upper lips to the cause and raised over $1300. They even chronicled their 'mo-growing progress in weekly pictures (which was quite a sight to be seen!). If you haven't seen the photographic evidence of their commitment to a good cause, check out our Facebook page.

World's Largest Truck Convoy

Getloaded has actively supported the Special Olympics since 1999 -- and this year, we brought their annual World's Largest Truck Convoy fundraiser to Virginia for the first time. Over a dozen tractor-trailers gathered outside Richmond, Va., for our 55-mile convoy that raised more than $12,000 for the Special Olympics of Virginia. We're already planning next year's event, where we hope to raise even more money for one of our favorite nonprofit organizations.

Project Homeless Connect

Last month, our employees gathered to help homeless Virginians access resources many people take for granted -- like dental screenings and medical exams -- as part of Project Homeless Connect. Our volunteers served as navigators, guiding individuals as they visited service providers and ensuring they felt comfortable throughout the process.

We are proud of the ways our team gave back in 2011 and excited to prepare for even greater contributions in 2012.

Know the Trucking Business

By: Timothy Brady

In every endeavor, skill and knowledge are the building blocks for success -- they create strength and give you the power to succeed.

Skill is knowing the mechanics of maneuvering 80,000 pounds down the highway, through congested traffic, down an 8 percent mountain grade or a blindside back to a dock off a busy boulevard. Knowing if there's something wrong while maneuvering that 18-wheeler and addressing the issue before a problem arises also demands skill. The best teacher here is hands-on experience.

Knowledge in the trucking industry includes financial and business aspects of your trucking operation, like what cash flow you need to start up and run a new carrier -- and lasting business growth requires many areas of expertise. Correctly figuring your break-even point, setting aside sustainable capital (the cash that carries you through the lean periods) and growth capital (the money needed to grow your operation), and calculating a profitable hauling rate range all depend on knowledge. Finding the best markets, shippers and brokers for your carrier takes industry insight. To differentiate your company from the competition, you need extensive knowledge about developing and growing a profitable freight lane; integrating shippers, brokers and load boards to obtain maximum revenue with minimal hassle; protecting your cash flow; ensuring shippers or brokers pay you in a timely manner -- and more.

In trucking, you can't advance on skill alone. To build a truly successful and sustainable trucking company, you must know how to navigate a truck, as well as our industry's nuances and opportunities.

The route to this kind of specialized knowledge begins with reading trade magazines, blogs and newsletters. But you must also have a commitment to education that's a bit more formal: webinars, online courses, and community college and university classes on general business and accounting. This type of "book learning" education provides a trucking company owner with a solid foundation of knowledge, which becomes his trucking wisdom once he's running his operation.

Skill comes from knowledge; knowledge comes from education. The paths to this understanding differ, but there are two primary ways a person can gain the knowledge they need:

  • First-hand experience, being there and doing the job, making mistakes and working in the trenches.
  • Studying and conducting research until you know your subject inside and out.

To ignore either kind of education will put any trucker at a tremendous disadvantage - whether you've been in business for three months or three decades. The industry is always changing, and if you think you've learned everything, be careful you don't find yourself watching as the rest of the trucking world passes you in the hammer lane, blowing off your doors.

To succeed in the trucking business, you have to know the trucking business. Whether you are refining your skills or building your knowledge, I wish you success in the new year.

Tax Tip: Want an Extra $2000 This Holiday Season?

So, you didn't get the new shotgun or fishing gear you were hoping for? Or maybe you did, but now you know the credit card bills are coming?

With this simple tax tip, you can easily put $1,000 back in your pocket this holiday season -- possibly $2,000 or more!

Did you realize you're not required to keep receipts for any items purchased for less than $75 each? This rule applies to parts, supplies or just about any item you use for your business -- even stuff you buy at home.

If you're wondering how such small purchases can turn into thousands of dollars, the math may surprise you.

Let's say you think of only two items per week you spent just $50.00 on, where you either lost your receipt or simply didn't get one. (You can record these items and amounts in your log if you like.) You can even go in after the fact and record purchases from earlier in the year!

Two previously unrecorded $50 purchases per week add up to an extra deduction of $5,100.00 that you wouldn't otherwise have -- which translates into tax savings of $2,000.00 or more!

This simple tip is just the tip of the iceberg -- you can find many more tax cutting and money savings!

If your current tax preparer isn't on top of all your trucking deductions, eTruckerTax and Dennis Bridges, CPA would love to help you make the most of your money.
